What Dave was talking about...

Lumiquest <snip> diffusion screens for <snip> pop-up <snip> flash

I'll be triple-dipped. I've used a Lumiquest ProMax bouncer kit for my big flash for what, 20 years? I had no freakin' idea they made one for pop-ups! I've always had a severe love/hate relationship with my pop-up flash, but for casual shooting the big gun is a lot of fiddle-with. The pop-up on the 50D is the sweetest I've ever had, but it's still either like using a howitzer on a fly or using a fly on a howitzer - blown out or dark. $13 at B-H Photo - gonna order one after their Sabbath is over!

THANK YOU!

(Now I gotta go read the rest of your post...)

You won't be disappointed...

This is a closeup of a Crotalus oreganus luitosus, or a Great Basin Rattlesnake. I shot this at 11pm, New Moon, cloudy with no stars. I used my pop-up flash at 1/4 power with the diffusion screen, shot at about 96mm focal length from about 3 feet away. No blown highlights, no hard shadows, and no distracting "flash bombs" in the iris or smoother parts of the scales. Plus...the diffused light adds depth. When using the pop-up flash, since it is so close to the lens, you can lose a lot of depth in the subject. Since the diffuser spreads the light more evenly across the entire frame, you can keep that depth of the subject, without fishing out the big flash units, angle brackets, and an extra tripod...

here's what I saw in the Dobson Fly pic...

I've been thinking it over... Maybe it's just time to get comfortable with the concept of lifting the veil...re-inventing myself from the ashes of my own complacency.

My name is Dave Partington.
Hell, if Kathy Love can make her username the same as her real name...
why should I hide behind a username anymore. I am who I am.
So it's time to change my username.
I'll be back as me, not as a username.
Thanks for showing me it's okay to be real.

Go for it, dude. It's completely unrecognizable as my photograph, so help yourself. I got no problem with. But if you get rich off of it...hook a brother up!! :D
