How much food for a 400 g corn ?

Capt O

New member
I know the Roy Manson plan which I think is a very good guide line. However, I have seen a post from Roy saying that once a snake is 350 g + it is up to the keeper to find the right amount of food. My new lady is almost 400 g and I am not really sure how much to feed her as this is my first bigger sized corn. Perhaps I should start with about 30 g of mice every 7 - 10 days and see how much weight she puts on or should I rather feed a bit more or even less ? I also plan to breed her in about 6 month time......

PS. Sorry, but I could't find much info by searching in the archive.... :poke:

Do you use eBay? I just got mine from there - $15.99, free shipping. Works great. The seller has more. Let me know if you want the link.

Ooh, I think there is one at my house I can use. I go home monthly, should be enough. :p Thanks!

To go back to the OP's question....

I'd say you had a good starting point there. It's definitely a case of working out what works for each one.

I feed no more than one adult mouse every 10-14 days to my breeding females. Once they're gravid I'm more generous and get as much food in them as I can leading up to laying - one adult mouse a week is about all they're interested in, but sometimes I can get them to take one large mouse and one small at the same time.

It's awkward with breeding females. During the winter months you have to walk the tightrope of making sure they're in good condition for breeding, but not overweight or underweight as either could potentially lead to problems.

I can tell you that the snakes I have in that size range, when fed one adult mouse every seven days, grow. Like Bitsy says, if you want to maintain a current weight, you'd have to feed less often.

Here is what I have my adults on:

Crue - 05 Normal Motley: Weight on 8/1/09 was 605g.
Fed every 2-3 weeks:
8/7/2009 26g
8/16/2009 25g
8/28/2009 26g
9/17/2009 27g rat pup
His weight has been stable since February, never fluctuating more than 5g

Lava - 05 Okeetee - Weight on 9/2/09 was 697g
Fed every 2-3 weeks
8/7/2009 27g
8/16/2009 27g
8/28/2009 32g
9/17/2009 27g rat pup
Even though she has been on this schedule, she has gone from 595g in February to her current weight. Still gaining!

Sabrina - 06 Ghost - Weight on 9/2/09 was 348g
Fed every 1-2 weeks
8/5/2009 25g
8/10/2009 20g
8/14/2009 23g
8/28/2009 26g
9/8/2009 27g
9/17/2009 26g rat pup
In August, she weighed 341g. By looking at her weight, I could probably bump her up either on food size or how often I feed her (although she gained 7g in two weeks, not bad!). She is still gaining weight back from egg laying, however. So has been on a once a week feeding for a while now.

Cain - 06 Bairds rat snake - Weight on 9/2/09 was 471g
Fed every 2-3 weeks
8/5/2009 25g
8/16/2009 23g
8/28/2009 25g
9/17/2009 27g rat pup
On this schedule, he has still gained weight from 447g in August to his current weight

Hope this helps!!

Many thanks to bitsy, Nanci and ratsncorns !!!!

This helps a lot. Now I am sure I will find out what the right amount for my little Hypo girl is.

Cheers from Thailand

Hey Cap, I'll have to weight my snakes again but I think my butter was 600 plus grams and my amel who was bigger but loose weight since the burn is about 500 plus grams now. I feed around every 10-14 days for them now.
Maybe I should cut the butter back to every 14 feeding???
Oops..I feed them an adult mouse too.

Roy's scale dosen't go that high tho LOL.

To be honest, if my snakes are that big I don't worry about the weight of the mouse. Matter of fact I don't weigh any of my mice. For the babies up to adults I judge their food by their size, the girth of the snake determains how big a meal they get. If they are 300+ grams then I just toss them adult mouse. It works for me and all my adults are healthy and tone. But that's just how I do it. :)

I think an adult mouse can vary between 20-30g. For me, its 25g+.

Becky, I would do that if I wasnt OCD about routine and how I feed my snakes. My adult mice comes in varying sizes and I want to be sure I have enough for my smaller snakes. When I get an order in, I organize my mice in baggies according to size... Strange, I know!

That's how we approach it, too. Bob, our almost-kilogram amel, gets a "big freakin' mouse" (rats result in too-stinky poop), the other adults get "big" to "good-sized", sub-adults get "that one's almost grown up", the little babies get "what's the smallest you have?", and the refuseniks get the tails from the adult mice shoved down their throats. Highly specific and scientific.

Do you really need to know exactly how much it weighs? I'm pretty anal about my records, but I'm fine with a scale that rounds to the nearest whole number. Knowing that one weighs 439.8g isn't going to help me any more than 440g.

Right now I feed my adult corns (males and females) an adult mouse every 10 days...they are barely gaining weight (3-4g) every feeding.
