Nobody euthanised your mother after she gave birth to you....

But Elle the picture shows an emaciated snake. One that most likley IS suffering. I said what I needed to say about you. But now I don't care about your feelings. But I do care about the animals feelings and what she is going through. That is all I have to say. So you have no need to respond.

Take your insensitivity's else where David. I pray you never go through what I have been through in the last 10 months. But if anything like this ever does happen to you, I want you to keep in mind what you have said to me, and think seriously about euthanising every female which looks emaciated or in pain straight after giving birth.

I guess you will be burying a lot of female snakes...
 
im sorry, it really sucks to see that. and to know the case of possibility of disease in your collection. it must suck having such a hard time with it all. and i also think putting a snake down just cause its a bit skinny is not a smart thing to do at all. she'll come around, snakes are amazing at what they can do. unlike many other animals. i bet ive seen snakes in worse conditions in pet stores. i hope a speedy weight gain for that girl, those are some good sized babies/litter for her.

The only positives I can take from this experience now is perhaps a time frame and an idea of what to expect next time round (years down the line). So little is known about breeding candoia. People have begun to work out paulsoni and tasmai, but the likes of carinata and aspera are still very hit and miss.

I am so gutted none survived, and that all that waiting was for nothing. There was one bold striped baby that looked exactly like mum. The other patterns and colours were completely unexpected as mum and dad are both striped specimens, yet I got a black baby and zig zag patterns.

Just need to keep a good eye out on my other female who I was told was NOT gravid from a reputable herp vet. I took both girls in last week for a checkup as they were at least 4 - 6 weeks overdue. Looks like he was soooo wrong. I'll be giving him a call tomorrow to express my disappointment in his assumptions. I wanted answers, not guesses! And now look whats happened.

No there is a difference from just giving birth and emaciated. I am not being insensitive. I feel for you but I alos feel for the snake. She looks to be uncomfortale and in pain. I have seen snakes that just gave birth and they look nothing like that. I am sorry for your loss. Now I feel sorry for the snake
 
David, Boas generally either stop eating or eat very small meals while gravid- thats just how that goes. The eggs take up a fair amount of room leaving little for meals and gravid females remain for the most part inactive saving energy for the birth. After birth for snakes and women all the sudden what took up all that room is gone hence loose skin and thiness- ever see a woman after birth- its scary i can provide pics!! It takes weeks for the skin to bounce back from being so stretched, but thats not abnormal nor is it considered suffering unless you count the pain a woman feels everytime she walks by the mirror naked suffering. Bottom line is euthanizing a snake after laying isn't protocol. You give that snake time to bounce back and begin to feed. You owe Elle an apology for being an ignorant butthead;) (I say that with love btw)

Elle, I am very sorry for your loss I know you must have been excited for her to give birth soon, and to come home to this after celebrating your b-day is horrid. I hope in a few days she perks up and after a few tubed meals eats as usual. Theres always next year after she recovers which I know is no solace now, but yours and her time will come:)
 
Tula Robbie is right. I was out of line and the things I said were undeserved. I am sorry. I know nothing but basics of candoia. I was WAY out of line I am sorry. I don't know what I was thinking.

Hell hath no furry like a woman scorned- your asking for it big time. Be quite young lad please your wrong here. You've seen too few snakes none the less carinata give birth- live birth not laying. Pipe down, apologize, and take this time to learn about a new species not pipe off at the mouth:)

It is not recommended to breed candoia females two years in a row. Their wee hearts just can't cope with the strain. 10 months gestation is a long long time. I don't plan on trying again next year.... or the year after.

It's too late for that David. I can't accept your willy nilly apology. You never thought for a second about your initial response, and I don't think you understand just how insensitive you were/are.

In times like this, sometimes saying nothing is the best option.

Elle in ten years after many many success breeding seasons you'll look back and use this story to educate others. I know this is a huge road block now, but its not permanent just crappy for now. Give your sweet lass a big hug and kiss she'll be in my thoughts:)
 
How can you look out for a snake that for a start you have no knowledge on whatsoever... You have seen a picture that shows less than 1 3rd of her body. I certainly couldn't make the descision to euthanise anything based on such a small potion of the truth.
