How much wait to hold down lid? (Sorry I'm paranoid)

I have a young corn (about 4-5 months old) in a starter ten gallon and the lid doesn't fit very snug. There's clips on the lid too, but they push in from the sides so it can still wiggle up and down. So I put 2 - 10 pound weights on top of the lid, with books under them to disperse the weight over a bigger area (and also so the weight isn't just on the screen). There's probably about 25 pounds total on top of the lid. My question is, is this enough to keep Charlie from getting out? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm just really paranoid.

That might keep me from getting out! For my hatchling tubs, I just put an old textbook on each one. Make sure there aren't any gaps and you're set...

Dang, you giving it steroids? I think you can remove 20 of that... You know, you bend those clips to adjust them so the lid is held down tighter...

lol, I told you I was paranoid.. and the clips aren't like the metal ones that wrap around to hold the lid down. They are plastic pegs with different knotches on them. You slide them through a hole in the side of the screen frame and twist to lock into place. This is the best picture I could find of the screen.

lol damn 25 pounds, u got an anaconda in there? stamples has the binder clips that hold pretty good

I know that lid, I use them on the mice tanks, never takes long for me to snap those pegs right off.

yeah I try to tighten them so the lid is more snug, but then the plastic frame bows outward and becomes warped. I just have the pegs keep the lid from wobbling too much and use weights to keep it down. My last corn before my new babies was in it and escaped because I didn't have weight on it to keep it down perfectly. That's why I'm paranoid of escapes with this lid.

My other baby is in a critter cage with the sliding locking lid, and a twistie tie through the lock ring in the front. That lid I'm not so much worried about, but still... lol.

Why not get a screen that fits properly and some secure clips? Then no more books and weights and possible escapes. Might want to get these problems fixed before you get a VBB. They are a whole new ball game compared to corns.

The screen I bought was supposedly perfect for the cage. I'm probably blowing things up a bit because I'm paranoid. It only has a fraction of wiggle room, but somehow I had a baby corn escape from the cage in the past. Then again she could have gotten out when I changed her water. (I was a horrible newbie at the time.. still kinda am)

Ugh, I have one of those lids. I thought it would work perfectly for a young corn snake, so got one to go with a 20 gallon aquarium.. The beardie's rescue saved me from ever dealing with the heartbreak of an escape, though, since he took up residence in it shortly after I figured out the gaps were too big. It's a perfect screen for the small adult ball python that lives in the tank now, but that's pretty much it. =P

To answer the question... A heavy text book on either side would probably be fine to keep the lid down, but getting a new lid (or a new enclosure altogether!) would be much better for calming your nerves.
