Blood? little Graphic

This is only my second breeding season so I don't know if this is normal or not but it really freaked me out! I paired these two together last week and thought there was a lock then but saw no evidence. Today I paired them again and saw a definate lock through the tub (I don't open to try not to bother them). I left the room for about 20-30mins to do some laundry while they were locked and came back to see they were unlocked and there was a lot of blood. I checked both snakes and I don't see any wounds so i'm guessing it's something from the vent? I don't see any blood on Butters(male) but i do see a little on Sita, near the vent(picture didn't really pick it up). Butters was bred by me last year and Sita was bred by Buzzard last year.

Here are the pictures.

Is this at all normal? Any guess at who it would have come from?

It most likely came from the female. I've seen blood (albeit not quite that much) in my breedings before, and I know quite a few other breeders have as well. I'll let those with more experience reply to say whether or not it's serious, though.

Well at least you've seen a little blood before. Neither looks hurt and they aren't jumping or hissing or striking or anything to show any pain so I hope it's nothing serious.

Do you happen to know why there would be any blood? Is it something I should worry about, maybe put off breeding again at all or just for a week or so?

Was it a virgin pairing? Sometimes, the male might be a bit "larger", or a bit more aggressive than the female can handle, which might cause some inner tearing.

No neither were virgins, Sita was bred last year by Buzzard. Butters is bigger than her though, She's always been a small snake. I wanted to breed her with Rolo who is a smaller male but he's completely uninterested.

I get at least one pair a year that leave a bloody mess behind after their mating. I've never seen any ill effects.

It's happened to me once. I bred the same pair three days later and everything was normal.

Not to be too graphic, but I know from my job that a couple drops of blood mixed with bodily fluids can look like a LOT of blood.

I am sure the blood came from the female. Sometimes, this happens. Usually in smaller quantity (which I have personally witnessed with a breeding, "or two", of mine) but I have known of others who had what looked like as much as, if not more, than what you have there. It is normal.... a normal abnormal.;)

I had it happen for the first time this year. Thanks to Nanci bloody evidence post last year, I knew exactly what happened but my girl is not a virgin and has been with boys tons bigger than her boyfriend this year so I am not sure why it happened. However, like you have already been reassure it is normal, scary but normal.

Okay great. Glad it's normal, it just freaked me out when I glanced through the tub and saw it! Each snake went through a head to tail inspection lol. Thanks everyone!

I can't say anything on the blood since I'm not a breeder, but I must comment on the awesomeness of your female's name.

Haha thank you! She was suposed to be a biter so I named her after a vampire in a book I was reading. She's never even tried to bite me but I'm happy she hasn't lived up to her name :) I've got better pics of her in the photo section, need to get some new ones though

Wouldn't happen to be "The Last Vampire" series by Christopher Pike would it? That's where I got mine from. I read them back in high school (a decade ago :eek1:) and I've been using it ever since. Except I didn't know it was a Hindu goddess until people started asking me if I was from India. :) I still kept it though.

Yep that's the one! Fell in love with the name lol. I found it in the clearance section of BAM and couldn't put it down. Since we're getting off subject you can PM me if you want :)

Wow, it's a good thing I read this thread, because if I were to breed my snakes and see a bloody mess like that without knowing it's normal, I would have freaked out!
