Breaking News....Burmese Kills 2y/o....

Old School Snakeman
Fox news just broke the story. A two year old girl has been killed by the pet Burmese Python. Just up the road form me in Oxford Fl. Will post a link as soon as more is known.

Agreed bud....

Oh this is going to be bad.

My first concern is the death of a 2 y/o girl. Very tragic for all involved.

I just hope there is a good investigation. The snake will get the blame. I just wonder where the parents were?

There is a slippery slope rising in Florida against reptile keeping.

Oh this is going to be bad.

I couldn't agree more!! What this could do to the snake pet trade could be detrimental!
I am so upset that a 2 year old could be anywhere NEAR a snake that could harm her let alone kill her. That is just stupdity 10x. What a sad day for that poor little baby.

Of course the snake will get all the blame. It maliciously sought and murdered a child, because it's evil. It's never the parents' fault. At least not in today's society.

Sadly, you are very correct. There will be an uproar on owning snakes, and an amendment on owning "wild" animals bill brought up and too soon the sale and ownership of snakes will be nonexistant in florida.

What a sad story and yet a sadder commentary on how parents take care of their kids!

Let's keep this in context of a child losing their life, who knows what this will mean for pet snakes, and for now who cares. This is tragic, whether the parents were irresponsible or not, they just lost their child, this is awful.

Bay news 9.....

just announced Sumnter County Sheriff and FWC are on scene. Unclear right now if it was a wild or pet python.

I don't know if you can blame the snake or parents really. It wasn't confirmed if this incident was from a wild python or not and if she was even in the care of her parents or a sitter, family member, ... The snake was just trying to eat probably, but honestly a two year old is well...a two year old. I can't count how many times I have turned away for a moment, been putting away laundry, or vaccuming and one of my kids did something at that age. My son snuck out once at night when we were all sleeping, unlocked both locks on our front door, and would have been free and clear if the dogs had not barked and he was 2. At two he also decided while I was vaccuming downstairs it would be a bright idea to put a laundry basket on the top of the stairs and fly down. He could of been killed, but thank god he was fine however, my point is no matter how hard you try an instant is all it takes for something to go wrong. That girl could have wondered out for just a moment and really a python that large could strangle a child in less than a minute. I am sure the family is beside themselves now however this tragedy happened.

The news story says the snake was a family pet that had escaped its enclosure during the night. Sadly, a child paid for this with her life. I hope there is more clarity on the type of enclosure that was provided, because my bet would be that it was totally inadequate and a disaster waiting to happen.

I agree 2 year olds should be under constant supervision. But we do not know the full details of this story yet. I feel bad for the little kid, but also for what this is going to do to the reptile trade. The incident that happened out here in Vegas with Eve the reticulated python, was completey the caretakers fault, yet most people I have spoken with see it as the snake being the one at fault. Many people have formed a more negative opinion of snakes out here due to that incident. And Eve wasn't a violent snake at all, I knew her shortly while she was at the snake shop. The people who where taking care of her where letting her roam free out of a cage. It was human error, but most people wont see it that way. Thats what makes this worse, is the fact of how it will change the way people view snakes on some level..

THis is very sad.. :(

Anyone read the comments below this article by all the ignorant people who know nothing about snakes..

Natural selection......

I will not loose sleep over this.
But Yes. I am kinda mad just because I know the snake will suffer for being a snake..
poor snake.

Sad, just sad. All around this incident is going to make mega headlines. So it looks like it was "pet" and it got out of its house during the night and strangled the little girl. Even reading the report I found one big error in how to deal with a snake attached to someone. I could go on and on. :angry01:

I know it is not just in the reptile pet industry but in the dogs' and cats' as well. There is misinformation out there on snakes but there is also so much proper information and it is easy to get one's hands on. Why do we continuously see stories like this in the news? A dog did this, a snake did that. If we want to continue to have the freedom to pick your own pet, then we need to get educated and be responsible people!

I know this is not the place nor the time to go off, but I am saddened and sick over stories like this; along with the animal cruelty stories. Humans are better than this!

Sad...just sad :headbang::mad:

:roflmao: you have to read the replies on that link:
"anyone who feels the need to own a Boa or pythons need to move where these Reptiles are native to, and stop thinking they are house hold pets. They are not!!!!!!!!!! these are very sick people who feel it is okay to own any such pet. when you have to kill a rat or chicken to feed your house pet you have huge issues.and I sure DO NOT want you in my neighborhood."
Good thing this was not posted on CS.com....:nope:
