REALLY Cool Feeding Pictures...

This is Erricca. I put in a live baby anole about an hour ago. While I was doing some college papers, I heard her strike and looked over to see her hanging from one of her vines, upside down, trying to swallow the green anoles head the wrong way (the long way.) She took FOREVER to eat it, and I was really worried but she finally got the anole swallowed. I took some pictures to share...Enjoy!

I posted a thread about this in the Feeding Issues section while she was trying to swallow the lizard. It worried me, but I am glad I snapped a few good pictures. Thank goodness my anole breeding program is going good!

I think it is kewl too! Told you she'd be fine (on the other thread).

I'm kinda interested in why you're feed it an anole. Is she a problem feeder (on mice)?

Heh. Good to here shes made it out alright.
Sorry I couldn't help you out earlier, but you got some cool shots though!

Erica I would avoid feeding her anoles, mostly because most anoles are WC. And Most WC anoles have parasites. Parasites stunt growth, and can even lead to death. I would 100% avoid feeding you Cb snake anything WC. Sure I have done it after 72 hours of the WC item being in the freezer!

that is good advice but if read it properly she said that she breed them her self, and very cool pictures

Why thanks for the Complement Robbie! I never feed anything live that I catch. When I go to GA I often catch 5 or 6 anoles and take them home and freeze them because my Herald snake is a picky lil girl

Thanks for your concerns, but I breed my own Anoles in a enclosed, secure, environment. So I am pretty sure they are parasite free :)

And my snake is Erricca, not me :) I'm Emily.

She isn't really a problem feeder, I just like to supplement her diet with different things every once in a while. Wouldn't you get tired of eating the same thing every day? I breed my own anoles so I don't see how it could hurt her. I usually feed one once a month. Sometimes at the same time as the pinkie, and sometimes I just put the anole in the tank with Erricca so she can eat it whenever she wants.

Not if it was pizza!

I'm not against you feeding the CB anoles...but just wanted to say 'wouldn't you get tired of eating the same thing every day' is a rather anthropomorphic thing to say. We can't take human thoughts and feelings and extrapolate them onto animals.

Of course I would get tired of eating the same thing every day...but I'm a human, not a snake.

Interesting picture though, I don't think I've ever witnessed an anole feeding.

Well I was just saying...I feed her them because I have Anoles, they have babies, I have a snake...What would you do? I think the variety is good for a hatchling since they would be eating pinkies and anoles in the wild.

Like I said, I think that's perfectly fine :) Especially since you breed them yourself and have a steady supply.

I was just pointing out the anthropomorphic sentiment of the statement "wouldn't you get tired of eating the same thing ever day". It's just one of my pet peeves. It would be like a snake saying "I like mice, so this human must like mice as well"

Good Argument: "they would be eating pinkies and anoles in the wild."
Bad Argument: "wouldn't you get tired of eating the same thing every day"

Okay, thanks for your help. I read the thing about getting tired of eating the same thing everyday in a Corn Snake book. So I figured it made sense. Maybe not.

My biggest concern is that...even though you bred the anoles yourself, are you absolutely sure they don't have parasites? Most anoles in pet shops ARE wild caught, and if they had not been deparatized or the babies frozen for a few days, you "could" be hurting your snake.

Not to mention, most of us only use anoles as a last resort for a snake that won't eat. If you snake eats mice with no problem, why risk her wanting only anoles?

What I wouldn't do for some baby anoles. We still have 4 babies that hatched back in June that have only ate 1 or 2 times. We have tried everything, including scenting with an anole. But at $7 each it's way to costly.

I got my adult anoles 6 months before I got my snake. I kept them in seperate housing and treated them/checked them for mites or parasites. I put those drops in their water for mites and parasites and kept them in quarentine for 4 months. I put them together a few months before I got Erricca and I had babies by the time I needed to feed Erricca her second feeding.
So my anoles are mite/parasite free, I promise. She is not a problem feeder but i enjoy giving her a variety of foods and saving money! I spent 14 dollars on two anoles...and now have a uncoming supply of food at all times. Its great because I can't get to the pet store alot(its about an hour and a half away) so sometimes I run out of pinkies before I can make another trip. So its good for me to have the anoles just in case. I have heard nothing is wrong with feeding snakes different foods...so I have decided to do that :)

They are pretty easy to breed actually. I have a 10 gallon setup with a male anole and two females. I have lots of plants put in the dirt so that the male can have a "territory" and the females lay eggs at the base of plants. I pretty much just keep the humdity around 80 degrees and the eggs hatch on their own. I then move them to paper cups for a few days and either feed them to Erricca or give them to my other friends who have corns. When they get to big for Erricca to eat, I freeze them so I will have some this winter. Its pretty steady in the summer, but they never lay in the winter. So I just feed frozen babies.
