Rats as Pets part II

dwyn127

Cinderazzo
We got my daughter two rats for Christmas this year and they are awesome as pets. As soon as you walk into the room they're out of hiding and right to the side of their cage; open the door and they're in your hand. My daughter spends hours a day with them and you can tell they really enjoy it.

Speck's a smooth haired Berkshire.

Thank you for this thread Danny, I was wondering how it was going.
Your daughter looks so happy with them!

(and now I need to go....MY rats are wanting their playtime :) )

Very cute! Rat's definitely make great pets. I've had them since I was 5, they're like my dogs. :)

Danny, it's not cool to name food!:nope:

Rats are the best pets. Now if some one could come up with a strain that lived longer that would be perfect. Oh yeah, and ones I'm not allergic to as well.
Terri

Those are adorable ratties!!

I have a sick snake that the vet said may need to be fed live rats. I think this is the only way I'm allowed to bring live rodents in the house (housemates hate them), and if I do....there's no way I'm feeding it to the snake! ;)

Thanx everyone for the nice comments and yes, I agree with the beautiful daughter comment. It won't be long before there's a shotgun by the front door. lol

And no Kyle, my daughter handles them for hours on end and they've never nipped her, not even people handling them for the first time...great pets!

Cute! I never thought rats would be such good pets until we got our most recent two. The first pair I had I got from Petsmart and they weren't all that friendly. But this pair of babies we are raising are GREAT, and the older female, Sophie, has been better too. I am really keen on them, now.

Your daughter is really cute, and she looks happy with her pets. :)

Question for all the rat people- Which sex do you prefer??

I know males are calmer and friendlier...but the fact that they musk and stink more is a bit off putting.

Thinking I might need another rat! Very cool! Beautiful daughter too!

Tara, PLEASE don't get just one! They are so social that keeping them alone is a cruelty. They can suffer mental illness if kept alone.

And I personally prefer males. They don't really "musk", but they do smell a little like cornchips. Plus they very rarely get tumors while most females do.

I like to have a mix of males and females, because I like both in different ways. I like the females because they are so active, smart, and they are small. I like the males because they cuddle, tend to wrestle more with their buddies, and are so much bigger than the girls! I always get males neutered because it pretty much eliminates any aggression, it makes their coats super soft (otherwise its rough and they get greasy), and they can live with the girls! I love housing males and females together, they have so much fun and it makes intros so much easier!
