Rosalia - my new red tail boa! <3

JeniDB

Cool Kid
I basically purchased another rescue snake. I took her to the vet today and he said that she has been underfed, and kept at poor temperature and humidity. She's severely dehydrated. He told me to feed her tonight, so I did. I couldn't find any stores that sold rat pups, so I had to warm up two fuzzy mice. She took the first one, and just played with the second one. I think it's going to be a hard transition for her to go to f/t.. But I'm willing to work with her! She's beautiful! More pictures to come in a second.. =]

And, btw, I'm still working on getting the rest of her shed off. I got most off, but there's still a bit there (as you can see). It's hard to get off for some reason.. If someone has some tips that'd be awesome! I tried soaking her, but she wasn't that interested. I'm going to try to soak her again in a couple of days.

The vet today told me to focus more on getting her ambient temp and humidity up, and feeding her, and to focus less on her shed. What do you guys think?

She weighs 218.7g. She's about a foot and a half long. And her birth date was April 17th, 2009.

very awesome looking snake behind all that poor care it received. was she eating mice before you bought her or did they have her on rats. she might not even take a rat if you offered it to her. but i doubt that as boas like to eat most of the time. i could give you a couple adult mice or some weaned rats if you want. i dont have any pups but im always up for helping people out. especially ones that are willing to help save animals from poor care.

i would say the vets right. id keep away from any of your other snakes and just let her be. keep her humidity good with a good temps, ambient and basking spot. the only shed tips i know of is sphagnum moss to up humidity. and of course soaking. a good soak would be good to maybe help drown off any mites, and get her all clean and a bit more hydrated.

congrats on the new pick up. she is an awesome looking snake.

Definitely keep up the soaking. Snakes can absorb water through their cloaca as well as drinking. If he's dehydrated, you can to that to help bump up the water weight a bit. Other than the stuck shed, I'd say she's not too terribly underweight. She looks a bit thin around the tail area, but a few feedings and lots of water and soaking should help with that. :)

Thank-you! She is quite charming. And she's so gentle, too. And the previous owner had her on adult live mice, every other week.

I'll have to get some spagnum moss this weekend. I forgot about that stuff. I'll go finish up a Country Crock tub of butter and put some moss in there for her.

Also, she is luckily mite-free. I'm so glad of that. That's one thing I don't have to deal with.

Yea the vet said she just has a lot of loose skin because of how dehydrated she is. I keep forgetting that, seeing the skin, and thinking, "Holy cow this snake is little"

But She'll be a year in two months.. Shouldn't she weight much more and be much longer than she is? That's how I decided she has been severely underfed. I bought a red tail boa book and it said that within the first year of their life they should grow 2-3 feet. She's barely more than a 1.5ft.

Thanks for the help, Robbie! I always forget they can up water through their cloaca.

Try putting it in a pillow case with lots of damp rags.....
Place it in her viv and leave for a couple of hours......
Poking occasionally to get movement....
Thats a J/k.... A touch or two should get movement, just look for her tail....
With the feeding.... Careful you don't get over zealous..... LOL
And a big hand to you for rescuing.....
It looks like it's a win-win situation for both of you..

Thank-you very much. I have decided I have a big heart for rescuing snakes. I like to know I can give them a good life. =]

Yep, the warm wet towels is good. Or even in a small container with wet moss or wet papertowel, leave her a few hours and come back and let her wiggle through a dry towel several times. That almost always works!

I didn't think of that. I've had her wiggling through my hands with a warm, wet towel between us the past few times.. I'll definitely throw some wet towels in there.

I got my little beauty out to play for a good 15 minutes before feeding night this week.. She's too adorable not to!

Not the best of pictures.. Once the weather gets better, I'm sure she'll have a nice big outdoorsy shoot!

Thanks! She is looking much better. And she's calming down with handling. She was feisty for a little while after she started getting better. =]

I'm so attached to her. She's a doll for sure.

Yea she looks like a sweety! I wish these guys didn't get so big or they would be my next choice....instead I'll go for an ATB or BRB thanks :grin01:

Oh I would love to own a BRB..

And in regards to the size, I'm excited to watch her grow big big big! =] She will more than likely be the only "big" snake I ever get.

lol Yea, watchin them grow is fun! Donatello weighed in at a whoppin 57g's today!

But I just don't have the room for a biggin like shes going to be.

Poor thing - she looked in such a state in the first picture :(

How could someone let an animal get in such a condition - even someone with a room temperature IQ would be able to tell that something wasnt right... but I guess from what you've said the previous owner didnt care at all...

Im glad shes recovered well and is calming down - I wouldnt relish a nip from a snake her size - probably do a sight more damage than a baby corn...

She's lucky to have landed in your lap.

Yeah, after seeing her teeth at her vet visit - I'm a bit intimidated. :D

And, thank you, I'm trying to do all I can to get her back to being a healthy pretty lady. Seems to be working so far!

Update!

Who doesn't want to see pictures of this beautiful girl?

:p

She needed a liiiiittle bit of help with her shed today. Hence the wet washcloth. :)
