18 month old corn eye prob.

I have my 18 mo. old 50gram corn 'sunny' who started looking and acting like she might be going into Blue on the 23rd (last tuesday night) and I fed her with no problem the next night at 8:30pm which is her normal day/time. The next night on the 25th her eyes were very cloudy and skin color began dulling while she was hiding almost all day and night now.

On the 28th her right eye started to look a bit more cloudy then the left one. I left her alone on the 29th except for misting the viv. This afternoon I lifted up the hide she was under and her right eye was twice the size of the left and was almost white and not cloudy like the other. I called the local vet that deals with reptiles and got her in 40 minutes later.

The vet said she might have scraped her eye on something trying to remove shed. The vet gently used a Q-tip tip remove the right eye cap, which looks almost normal now, and gave me an antibiotic eye drop to apply twice a day for 5 days after shed. The thing is I think she was still in "blue" at the time, if so would she really have been trying to actually get the skin off already? I was under the impression they go blue, clear up, THEN shed? Is Sunny just too eager to shed? or am I just being too paranoid? just don't want my snake to end up with some type of infection =(

viv temps...
85.5 hot side on glass
76 cool side on glass
55% humidity while shes shedding

I had a similar problem recently. Our Sunglow one night started freaking out in her viv and when I opened the viv and got her out her eye was swollen also. I thought an ant might have gotten into her viv and bit her but I searched it and found nothing. I did find a piece of wire sticking out on the screen lid though, so I figured she must have poked it while searching for an escape lol. It went down after like 5 days. Then after she shed it swelled up a little bit. I figured it's just because the living skin was still trying to heal. Glad the vet was able to help you. The drops should help. What did that visit cost you if I might ask? Did anyone complement you on it when you brought in? or was she in a box?

Yeah, I hope the drops help too.. I think the most dangerous thing in the viv is a very small rock type water dish that I put in when I thought she was going to start shed to help with humidity and for something rough for her if she needed it. The general exam was $69 and the drops were $16. Honestly I was expecting it to be much more for some reason. But I must say they were very friendly and helpful there. The 'nurse' and the vet both said she was beautiful... I took her in a very large deli cup. I was just very happy to hear it was not an infection of some type. Her normal feeding day is tomorrow, the vet said to feed her the day after I find her shed skin. It's been 7 days almost since last feeding (the 24th of march) How long do you guys usually wait after a shed to feed? I hope the vet visit didn't stress her too much

Ok, well she shed for me last night! My question now is this... it's been 8 days since she ate last and the vet said to feed her after she sheds. If i feed her tonight, will it be alright to still remove her the the viv to apply the eyedrops twice a day like the vet said to? or is that too much movement for the two days after eating? I called the vet but the one who deals with the reptiles will not be back in until Saturday morning. Thanks everyone

How is she reacting to having eyedrops put in? I've only had to do it once and mine fought me all the way, If yours is like that, then feeding might be a regurge risk. But if she's calm about it, you could be absolutely fine to feed her.

I would finish out the eye drops before feeding. You don't want to risk a regurge. I just had a problem with a retained spectacle with a snake named Fred. (If you search for it, you can find the whole story). Be glad you caught it right away!

I gave her one drop right after she shed, and she actually didn't seem to mind much at all. I just waited until she was rather still on my arm for a second then dropped one on. But I did end up feedeing her last night and she ate like a champ like usual. I guess for today and tomorrow I'll just see if I can drop them on with her in the viv still.... this should be interesting heh
