2 dogs + 1 porcupine =

Bluebird

lovin my Okeetee boy
2 large dogs covered in porcupine quills at 6:30 am:crying:

That was how my morning began today.

I got up early this morning, as I work at a veterinary clinic, and I had to shower and get ready for work. I put the dogs in the backyard as I do every morning, so they could do their morning business. Well, I went to let them in, and all of a sudden I hear dogs crying. I thought another bear got over the fence again..our whole yard is fenced in and the gate closed every night to keep bears out. So... its pitch black in the bushy area at the back of the yard, and I can't see what it is hurting my dogs, but they were making enough noise to wake the neighborhood. I grabbed a flashlight and a rake, and headed towards the darkness to save my dogs..lol

Well, as you already know, it was a porcupine..a VERY large porcupine..lol..and there were my two big dogs, doing their best to try and eat it quilss and all.....they were COVERED in quills.:awcrap:

So, while they were freakin out, I was freakin out, cause now I have to get ready for work, make sure they don't cause further damage trying to get the quills out of their faces and mouths, and paws.

and....I have to bring TWO dogs to work, and add to my boss's already full day:crying:

I love my boss :)...what would have cost me $900.00, cost me less than half that...for both of my dogs to have surgery today:awcrap:

So, both my boys are hurting and limping on both front paws. I have to watch for random quills that may have been missed...they can cause serious problems.

Anyhoo, that's how I started my lovely day today:rolleyes:

Oh, and the porcupine was unharmed ;)

wow, what a start to the day, did your day get better after that?! I'm glad to hear the dogs are ok and that your boss was so cool about it!! lucky you, working at a vet!

Yeah, I am very lucky to work there :)

Both of my dogs are wimpering still, and Diesel's paw is very sore...hopefully no complications arise:rolleyes:

Do you have to put them down to remove them? I've seen a picture of a bull terrier online that is so covered up I don't know how one extracted all the quills. Definitely put the fear of porcupines in me.

I hope your furkids heal quickly. That's got to be terribly painful.

Oh my god. That must have been terrifying. For some strange reason Dogs and Porcupines always seem to meet, and the Porcupines are usually the ones who get away free. When I was 14, though, my ex-step father had a dog named sparky, a rat terrier mix, and sparky thought he would take a bite out of a Porcupine. It was very sad, because Sparky was crying so badly with a face full of quills while my ex-step father pulled each one with plyers. He unfortunately was primative, and never took him to the vet, which luckily he didn't miss any quills, because that would have been terrible. Then he took his gun and went out to shoot the poor Porcupine out a tree. That was just terrible to watch, because I knew it wasn't really the Porcupines fault, because they only do that in self defense. I hope your dogs recover well, and hopefully they won't try and hunt the porcupine down!. By the way, what breed of dogs are they?.

Oh man!! I'm so glad they are okay. That's some scary stuff.

Made me think of this photo:

Thank you :)

I've seen that photo..yikes! They weren't that bad thank god! :)

this may be a dumb question, but are porcupine quills poisonous? poor puppies...

Nope, but they continue to travel within the body, so broken or missed quills can cause alot of havoc. Quills can continue to show up for a long time, until they travel out of the other side.

Thanks :) They both had to be intubated and put under anaesthetic to remove them. Quills on the surface can be pulled easily, but when they are in the roof of the mouth, nose, gums, and everywhere else, its very painful.

My 17 year old was furious with the porcupine..lol...I said ' do you think the porcupine was stalking them and attacked????' Porcupines just want to get away..lol..who can blame them?.lol

The two dogs involved today were Dozer and Diesel...the black dogs below...they are husky mixes...Porkchop wasn't in the back when it happened.

Thanks for the well wishes :)

I hope your dogs get better soon.

Thank you :)

I had to bring Diesel back to work with me this morning..and he had to be sedated again...he had broken quills in his paw that started coming out the other side and his paw swelled up and he was crying and holding his paw up this morning. So he's still sore and drunk from sedation..but Dozer seems to be doing fine :)

I went to check the yard this morning before putting them out..and instead of a porcupine....I found a bear. Yup...just what I needed..lol

Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow I won't find any more unwanted critters in my yard..lol

We're covered with bears where I live. I'd be okay with it if they weren't so invasive and I didn't have a dog that thinks she can whip one. Do you have to take your bird feeders in at night/keep trash indoors until pickup/etc., etc.? Living in the wilderness is great, but does have its downsides sometimes.

Great picture!. I'm not sure, but I'll guess their Husky/Rottweiler mixes. I was also wondering if their brothers?. Either way they look like great dogs, and I'm sure they add alot of substance to your life. It may appear those two are trying to kill each other if I wasn't use to how badly dogs can rough-house. We have 2 German Shephards, Ciana who turns 2 this december, and Nakita who turned 5 in july. They both rear up and make the worst kinds of noises, and I have a Dachshund mix named Rajon, that I adopted from a high-kill shelter in Arkansas a few months ago, who gets in on the action some times too. The funny thing is its Ciana who gets most of the damage, because whenever Ray attacks her feet she just stands their with her whole mouth wrapped around his head, but she never does anything more than that. Also, I'm not sure if your little dog is a Maltese, but they are the greatest. My brothers Maltese, Jason, passed away the spring before this past one from a heart condition, but he had more soul than any dog I've ever known. Thats how we ended up with Ciana, the Shephard, and our house has changed a bit to say the least. I'm always surprised at how well little dogs adapt to dogs 10x their size. At first I though of Rajon as fragile, but he's able to play with Ciana at full force. Anyway, I hope your dogs make a full recovery, and I hope the porcupine got the lesson as well!.

Thanks everyone :)

Its been a crazy week with my dogs...honestly, I though my boss was going to kill me on friday morning....I had to bring Dozer on Friday...he's had the poops since tuesday, and he unwilling urinated in my kitchen twice on thurs night. My dogs will burst before they pee in the house, but he lost control twice.

So we ran some urine on him, and it came back with high ketones in it. Usually you would see that in a diabetic dog that is having a severe attack, or a dog that is literally starving....and he's not..lol...he's 90 lbs :) So I think we will do some blood work on him to find out whats going on.

Diesel is still favoring his paw now and then, but there don't seem to be any other quill related problems :)

Thanks for caring :D
