A day at the stables

I had a nasty fall at canter yesterday. Goldie suddenly shied going past a fallen tree and I went flying up through the air and landed on my back. I managed to relax enough so the only consequence was the whiplash as my head hit the dirt and luckily it was on a soft dirt track. She circled and came back to me instead of bolting away. Settled for alternating trot and walk for 1/2 an hour before letting her canter again and kept her under much tighter control, so no more mishaps!
My shoulders are a bit sore and my neck a bit stiff today. Talking to her owner, Goldie had been very fresh and excitable and I was probably too relaxed and not keeping her in hand enough. Thank god for my riding helmet!

Hope you're ok Janine! I know you had past back issues.

Yes - that was the first thing I thought of, too - your old back injury that kept you out of work and took so long to heal. Hope this won't cause any exacerbation of that old problem! Scary stuff - glad you wore a helmet!

I didn't hurt my lower back at all, because I relaxed and fell onto soft turned earth, like when you somersault from a vault or on a trampoline onto a crashmat, Renata said it was a most impressive tumble! Of course a fall at speed like that could have resulted in serious injury, so I'm counting my lucky stars. My shoulders and neck ache just a little today from the whiplash.
@ Bar, Goldie suddenly jinked away to the side and it was at the 'up' part of the canter stride so I was bounced out of the saddle forwards and up! No bucking, and luckily the stirrups are safety breakaway ones so my feet didn't get caught. Being a very 'green' horse getting Goldie settled enough to get controlled canter again felt really good and her coming back to me rather than bolting away afterwards is a really good sign of her character. Renata did offer to change horses but I think she was more shook up by seeing my fall than I was from falling.

A lovely day with Coconuts and the gang yesterday, just field maintenance and then training games with Lola and Luna

A wonderful day today! I went over to visit Goldie and Calla and we went out for a lovely hack through the woods. It was far too hot for riding fast through the fields, so we stuck to the twisty, slippery slopes, which is my preferred type of riding. Goldie slipped about 6 weeks ago while her owner was riding her (resulting in a broken finger for Renata) so this was a good chance to rebuild her confidence.
I had to keep her focussed with strong rein and leg contact and work her through her fears, especially on the slope where she'd slipped. I made her take each slope in easy stages without rushing, praised her extravagently and she responded beautifully. From feeling like a coiled spring, ready to spook at everything and gathering herself to buck a couple of times (you know that feeling when the horse is drawing itself up to explode!) I got her calm and happy and working really well.
So not the most relaxing ride for me, but really satisfying to have helped Goldie to do so well.

Well I got a call from Renata, who owns Goldie, and she's off to her new owners today! Apparently a really keen family who go to gymkanas and shows, they fell in love with her at first sight and also bought her sister Blondie, then Renata said 'and I've got a new horse for you.........'! She's viewing a black gelding today, to be on loan as a field companion for Calla and for me to ride!
Yesterday in between fishing the reservoir I went to visit Cathy and the Crazy gang and help pull ragwort

That's a very fat horse there! Is she in foal or is she just like that? Sounds like a match for Goldie and it will be interesting to hear how they progress. I'm sure it will be great for the two sisters to get back together!

Which one? If you mean the dun, LouLou, she never got her figure back after having Lola, she's like a ballooon on legs!
