A handsome little Garter Snake

I caught this guy today. I know he's a guy cuz I saw, well, you know. I found him on a pile of rocks near my home. When I picked him up he flailed about with his mouth open. Never bit me, though. But he musked like no other snake I've ever caught.

I brought him home to show my kids, and I'm really considering keeping him. He's a great size, looks very healthy, and is about the cleanest, prettiest Garter I've ever seen. I'm going to keep him for at least a while until I see if I can get him to feed. If he won't feed, I'm going to release him where I found him.

Wow, he's really different than the ones I grew up with!

I have no doubt he'll eat for you.

Great catch SkyChimp and I agree with Nanci, good luck with him!! I'm trying to catch an eastern hoggie from this area and keep it. I hear we have this beautiful orange phase around here so I'm excited!!

My Eastern is yellow phase. Get yours (when you get it) wormed- mine had ascarids and nemetodes. Good luck switching it onto mice!!

He's beautiful! He really doesn't look like any Eastern garter that I have ever seen but those are the only one's found in Virginia! There is an Eastern ribbon snake but he does not look like a ribbon either.

Congratulations on a beautiful find. I hope you can switch him over to rodents.

Is that what they eat Nanci?

I really would love one of them but i only have one Snake and that's a Cornsnake and they are so friendly i don't think it would be wise of me to get another type of Snake till i have more experience.

Garter snakes in the wild eat worms, fish, and frogs. It depends what kind of garter snake. They have also been known to eat small rodents and birds in the wild. In captivity it is wise to switch them over to a rodent diet which most but not all will do.

Great find, I the blue garters we have down here in South Florida, I have caught a few well mannered ones that I ended up keeping around for a while and almost all switched over to mice no problem. I would either rub a pinkie or fuzzy on a frog or fish and they would usually take it no problem, sometimes they would eat the pinkie with no scenting. Best of luck with yours.

I actually decided to let him go today. My wife and I decided if just wasn't the right time to have another snake. She was definately uncomfortable with this one. It was extremely flighty and musked continuously. I tried to explain it was WC and would calm down with time. But not today. Oh well, maybe another day.

There are many more Garter Snakes out there- you just have to find one that agrees with your wife!

I found this melanistic garter last week. He reminds me of the black spiderman. :)
