a little hint for tub users:

Hmmm... I guess I'm the weird one, I like to drill the holes. I get a small crack 1 in 30 holes or so if I'm not really paying attention. I don't know if it's the bit or type of plastic, but I don't see any problems with it. I can't imagine how burning holes could be any faster, but I haven't actually tried it. I don't care for killing brain cells too often. I drill from the inside out, so there are no sharp edges or anything. I'll often drill through 3 of them at once to go that much faster. I don't worry too much about how straight they are, eyeballing it works good enough for me. I have wanted to get a metal rule with holes in it or something which are evenly spaced to guide the holes, but I haven't tried it.

I drill as well. I haven't tried drilling from inside out yet...I should.
I just use a chisel to get the edges off.

A long time ago we used bins for little rodents and would always crack the tubs drilling holes! When I started change the snakes to bins, the soldering iron my friend had lying around was a LIFE SAVER.

For me, the soldering iron gave very nice, even holes. The outside does have kind of a rough-ish beveled surface, but the inside is perfectly smooth, and that's where the snakes are so I don't mind! :)

Good idea. I'll have to try that. Someone oughtta just sell these things pre-drilled (melted) already.

Good idea. I've had the same (small %) of hairline cracks, so I'm cool with using a drill to put airholes in my bins. (I'd rather not deal with the odor/fumes, too).
A razor would be too dangerous in my hands, trying to smooth edges out LOL
The chisel works really well. :)

I just bought one of these things to fix my daughters DSlite w/! Now I have another reason to use it!!!! YAY!!!! :dancer:

You can also do this:

Buy an ice pick.
Turn on the exhaust fan over your stove (gas, not electric).
Heat the ice pick tip to red hot.
Push through plastic until you have the size hole you want.
Re-heat ice pick as necessary; do not worry if some residual plastic on the ice pick flames for a second: it will burn off cleanly.
When finished, run cool kitchen sink water over ice pick for 2 seconds.
