About Pinkies...

Does anyone have an estimation on how long baby corns typically stay on pinks?
I'd like to buy pinkies in bulk for much less rather than paying $10.00 for a box of 10 pinks at Petsmart, but I only have one snake. And thus, my predicament. If she were to be on pinkies for an extended period of time I'd consider buying 100 pinkies, but if she'll grow out of them before eating all of them I guess I'm stuck paying $1.00 per pink. :headbang:

If she's moving up in weight on double pinks, it's fine to keep her on them til you're out. It's not viable for her whole life obviously but I don't think anyone here would wet themselves if you used the last of your pinks for her. If she's on doubles, or you have multiples like me, 100 pinks is only 50 feedings.

Two reasons to buy in bulk -- one is you save money & two is you're ready for the next snake! I bought a bunch of pinks for Attitude. S/he's on double pinks every 5 days, so I figure I'll use them up, or feed them 3 at a time for a couple meals to get rid of the last of them before going to hoppers. Or I'll get another hatchling before these run out! Another option is to split a bulk order with another reptile owner who is local or somewhat so.

Just buy more snakes.. buy in bulk.. problem solved :D

Oh hee hee hee you so funny! Where do you suppose I put a bulk order of snakes? Hmm, Mr. Smarty Pants? :p

Ah the vast amount of helpful intelligence and information on this site. Thank you for the helpful tips!

OOh, I thought of one more thing to do with "leftover" pinks. I can feed a pink with a slightly undersized mouse to Icabod, instead of a bigger mouse. He has proven quite willing to take 2 smaller items instead of one larger, so I bet he would take a not-quite-enough mouse + a pink!

Ahh another good plan. I think that if I were to get another snake I might go the Sterilite route this time as i don't think I could afford a second 20 gallon tank. Annnnnd I do feel bad for a corn at the Petsmart by my house. When I was looking for a snake in December he'd been there for a while already and when I went in for something yesterday he was still there and probably as big around as my thumb (which was significantly larger than before.) That snake is some sort of "red-less" morph though I'm not sure which could be an anery or lavender or something like that (I'm not well versed in morphology :p.) It was very nice and looked healthy when I handled it. The only reason I didn't purchase that snake was because I wasn't partial to his coloring and it was about $30.00 more than the one I ended up purchasing. I pity the poor little bugger living in that little cage though. It seems to be eating well and growing quickly so I might get it when I'm more financially able. But until then it's just me and Bijou. :)

Some people will tell you not to buy from Petsmart because it just supports them in their bad habits! I imagine it's probably an anery, because lav would be unusual for Petsmart/Petco. My Attitude came from Petsmart though, for the same reasons -- I felt sorry for the little bugger, and s/he seemed healthy & active, and the person at Petsmart said s/he bit everyone so who knows if Attitude would have EVER gotten a decent home. Attitude still has bad hateling 'tude (about 5 strikes & 2 bites tonight, but this is IMPROVED from earlier), and I figure I can't save them all, but I saved this one, and that's enough for me!

I have 3 snakes so far, and from here on out it's tubs for me! I can't really figure out where to put more glass vivs. In fact, right now I am trying to figure out where to put a vertical rack of tubs.

Lol I don't know that I'd buy a little hateling, kudos to you for being brave. :) The "snake guy" at this particular Petsmart has snakes of his own at home and was explaining how he made his own vivs and what not, but at least they have someone who knows something about snakes caring for them. Who knows what I'll do, my birthday IS coming up though.... Maybe someone will be kind enough to buy him for me... lol

You can buy pinks in amounts as small as 25 from The Mouse Factory...

I have five babies from 2009 which arrived in August/September. All are still on pinks (most double pinks now) except Zora who has been on fuzzies for several meals and Mingo who just graduated to peach fuzzies on her last feeding. They range in weight from 13g to 43 grams.

So- they stay on pinks/double pinks for quite a while. I feed every five days.

Hopefully by 50 weeks you wont be feeding her the pinks anymore. However Pepper has a good point. You can always add a pinkie to her diet when the fuzzy(next step) is small. And you always have something in reserve if there are no fuzzies to be found.

It wasn't so much brave as ignorant. I thought Attitude had a bad 'tude because of living conditions. I get the little brat home & after a week to settle in offer a pink & get tagged multiple times while trying to put the brat in the feeding cup. Rinse & repeat for a little while. Then I hit on the idea after more reading here that the brat gets handled EVERY day except for the 48h after meals, whether Attitude likes it or not, and doesn't go back in the viv until the striking & biting stops & a little slithering thru my fingers happens instead. It's working. Still lots of tail rattling, S-curving, hissing & threatening to strike but many fewer strikes & most of those are closed mouth strikes not full-on bite attempt. It's been interesting.

I didn't know that... Thanks! And what a weight range lol

Hopefully not, she seems to be growing but I haven't been able to find a scale so I can't keep track weight wise. :nope: I've checked both Wal-Marts in town and also the one in Decorah, maybe I'll try Bed Bath and Beyond lol they have lots of kitchen stuff there.

:roflmao: What a little brat! "I am angry baby, feel my wrath!" I got a tail rattle while feeding last night, it was quite comical lol but I hope (and think that it probably will with what most people say) that little Attitude's attitude mellows out over time, an adult that grumpy wouldn't be much fun... :sidestep:

David owns "Doc", an anery blood who DOES have that attitude! He's gorgeous but attitudinal.

luckycharm318 if you have a health food store near you, try them for the kitchen scale, in my small city, neither the Walmart, Zellers, or Superstore had a digital kitchen scale but the health food store had one for approx. $30.
