I agree. If "we the people" don't take an active interest in what laws/bills are being passed now, even though they may not directly affect us at the moment, then we are in part responsible for any additional laws or restrictions allowed by the passage of said (previous) laws/bills.

That is true...for now...
It is much easier to divide and conquer when trying to kill an industry / hobby. They start with scary things that most people don't see a need to keep, such as tigers, monkeys, venomous snakes, giant snakes, etc. Once those are legislated out of existence, and the keepers or business people are no longer involved with animal keeping, it will leave less people and money to fight when they come after whatever YOU are interested in.
We should all be concerned WHENEVER ANYONE'S rights are taken away for ANYTHING without a true and important benefit to society. Our country has been in a "ban everything for our own good" mode for a long time. Every citizen should fight ANY unnecessary bans of any kind, unless you believe that adults should be protected by the nanny state from every possible harm.
I am not advocating "no restrictions on anything". I am arguing for restriction of freedoms ONLY when it TRULY serves a great public good - not just for some media attention to get votes for corrupt or inept politicians.
So please be very concerned with EVERY loss of freedom, not just those that directly impact you. (off soapbox now, lol!)

I see what you're all saying.....and fundamentally agree, however there are times when appropriate legislation is, well, appropriate. This may not be one of those times (I have no idea what the nature of these proposed banned snake species are - what are they, by the way? Are they generally considered dangerous?), but all I know is that: I want my neighbors to have gun permits and drivers licenses, take a test to be a commercial driver, have insurance to be my contractor, and pass a background check to be a Cub Scout Den leader. Is this a complete ban that's being proposed or something different? There has got to be a way to ensure appropriate checks and balances to ensure everyone's health and safety. Usually proposed legislation is an extreme slant on what the legislatures are actually looking to achieve. Maybe this will somehow be negotiated into something more pallatable for all parties?

There's a big problem with that though: a permit or a license doesn't guarantee anything. How many people with driver's licenses, who have taken driver's ed, still cause accidents? What's the solution? I have no idea, but neither do these congresscritters, which is why I refuse to accept full on bans, like the ban on the 'big 9.' :shrugs:

...on importing or TRANSPORTING (between states) any of the big snakes from boa constrictors on up to the bigger ones. You would still be able to keep what you have - unless you ever decide to move across state lines. Then you are out of luck.
Of course, I am sure it will work as well as the drug bans - we certainly don't see those sold anymore (sarcasm). What it WILL accomplish is that law abiding python and boa breeders will go out of business, since most states won't have enough customers to keep them afloat. But there will be plenty of people breeding a few pairs of this and that, and plenty of customers who don't care about stupid laws, and they will just go out of state and buy what they want.
What it will also accomplish is that those buyers and sellers will not be regulated anymore, since they have to hide what they are doing. And they, and the law abiding citizens who DON'T participate, will have lost what little respect for the law that they may have had previously.
What it won't accomplish is what officials say they want to accomplish. And that is to shut down the trade because of the invasive abilities of the species listed. Of course, since they aren't invasive to begin with in 95% of the US, I guess the unregulated lawbreakers won't be more likely to contribute to THAT particular problem.
The whole thing is just about special interest groups, and media. Nothing to do with science or the true "Public Good". And that is often true of MANY government regulations and bans. That is why I stated earlier that everyone should fight them all, UNLESS the officials proposing it can show a TRUE and GREAT public benefit for giving up ANY freedoms. Sometimes curtailment of rights is worth the benefit to society - but very often it is not.
