African Soft Fur rat pics

Asf's (african softfurred rat) are a smaller than normal rats. They tend to be nippy but multiple fast and provide a little more bulk as a food item(protein, fat, calcium ect..) Yes, I beleive they are illegal in CA.....

Plus they don't smell NEARLY as much as regular mice and rats!

Beautiful ASF's!! We have had a clan for about 4 years now and you are right, they usually produce a lot and smell way less then regular mice. Unfortunately, I made a booboo and let my clan get too old. They stopped producing about 4 or 5 months ago. So now I have to find some fresh blood.

How old is too old? Just so I have a vague idea of when to start making sure I've got another trio growing up.

My male is just about a year. My females are well over 2 years. I usually swap out the clan every yearish, but forgot to do it!

Gotcha. Well, fortunately, I've already got 2 more trios that have yet to produce anything because they're still a bit too young (a couple months for one trio, a few weeks for the other). When the original trio stop producing, I'll just set up another trio from one of those trios. :D

Sorry to hear that you have to hunt new Blood. I have noticed that mine slow down around 8 months or so. But it takes mine about 3-4 months to start producing.
What has been your experience Wayne, Robbie?

Mine popped out their first littler about 3 weeks after I got them home. LOL.

My colony's first babies are almost old enough to start breeding. They definatly stink waaaaay less than rats or mice. I can actually keep them inside instead of on the screen porch.

I believe our ASFs began producing around 4 or 5 months. I have seen that when the males are old (more mature) then the females, then they produce sooner.

I absolutely love the ASFs because they have a much lower odor, they have much bigger litters and their babies are bigger. We would have more, but for some reason, they give Christine (my wife) the hives.

So while I was working through my injury, we couldn't grow and expand the clans. I'm not able to pick up an clean all the tanks, like I should. I'm hoping that in the next few weeks, I can get some new females .

Golf Balls

You want to see something really funny and entertaining? Drop a good golf ball in with them. It should be one with no cuts or blemishes. It takes them a long time to finally get a knawing spot started so they spend a while trying their darndest to chew it and all they do is push it around. They will root each other out of the way to try and bite it, lol
