Am I Quarantine ready?

Carinata

Ever Evolving Exotics
I am ordering my new snake next wednesday and I want to be sure I am quarentine ready. I ussually don't please don't scold me for that I am not gonna lie. But I have made a a tub for it it is a 28 qt tub kept in my basement AWAY form my others. In side there is a thermometer and hydrometer. Newspaper bedding, two hides, a large water again please don't scold me

It's very good that you are keeping the new snake separate. I don't know if you already know this, but I am gonna post it any way.

Give that new snake a real good check over, before you get it.
Handle old snakes before handling the new one.
Wash thoroughly before and after handling.
Give him plenty of time, to settle in before you decide to play with him.

Good luck and I think you are gonna need it with this one.

Wayne

I ussually give them a 3 week no handling period except for when getting them out for ccleaning and unpacking after shipping. I also will wash really well and be sure to handle the old ones before her. I also don't feed for a week after she arrives is that okay?

That's what I do! I usually give them anywhere from 5 days or so to settle before I feed. Actually, go by what the breeder suggests. They will know more about the particulars. Please make sure you ask as many questions, as you can, when you go pick her up!

she is being shipped form illinois. But i have had communication with the breeder for he past couple weeks he said he had a family thing and couldnt ship for a week and he will b back on tuesday I will ship wednesday snake thursday I will probally set her up in the basement for added security

Do everything with that snake last, after the others. Like feeding, cleaning, washing the water bowl. If you normally use a scrubber for your water bowls, do not use it on the new snake. If you use anything like a scale, disinfect it right afterward. Of course wash your hands and disinfect all surfaces even better than you normally would. If the new snake refuses a meal, don't refeed that. Use separate tongs, hook, etc. with the new snake, if you use those.

Thanks! I have two cups to put on the scale so I will use my spare for my jasmine (I already named her)

Still clean it anyway, just in case. Jasmine is a good name! What are you getting? I haven't kept up with everything.

I am gettin a king rat before anyone gets rowled up I did some reasearch and with gentle handing they can tame down. She is a mid '08. Jasmine because she is oriental. My mom is excited she likes her colors. They are pretty fugly as babies brown with darker bown bands on the anterior of the snake. Anyway I have the setup and heat and stuff. I had one form BHB ready but I back out cause I wanted some more time to be 150% sure i could take it. I remember way back in the beginning of 7th grade we had to draw a picture of a long term goal. I'm in a gifted student program because I have this as they reffer to it as "Uncanny fasination with snakes" and I am really smart. Anyway I drew a picture of a king rat snake in full beauty!

I usually go overboard with the qaurantine. I do all my old animals first, shower and then do the new, wash hands with antibacterial soap, and then change clothes again. I do this for ninety days before they come to my reptile room and if anything is off in 90 days they get a fecal asap before going near my collection. It sounds crazy, but you never know and breeders don't always know the animal is sick some can harbor diseases for some time before showing symptoms so its worth it to be extra cautious in the long run. Good luck with Jasmin!!

Jasmine will be a special snake. See for a while i thought ohh I bet if I am really good mommy will get me a burm then I though wait I like asian rats soo much better I am a rat snake guy from here on out big boas and pythons don't interest me as much.
I am really excited to do all my new tubs. I just set up reggie m female ghost corn in a 28 qt she is so sweet. Whenever I go to shows I shower then soap then wait an hpur before I go into my herp bedroom

" ohh I bet if I am really good mommy will get me a burm "
did you really say that?
So...if you are "good", then "mommy" gets you whatever live animal your little heart desires? Is that how it works?

well at our house good behavior and good grades earn respect and responsibility which gets bigger snakes. I have to get approval from my mom she will be the ultimate decider and I have my cash for my king rat now

shouldn't respect and responsibility be a reward in itself?
It just feels like rewarding a toddler with a rattle if he behaves but in this case the rattle is a living, breathing and possibly dangerous "toy".

With all due respect, does your mom have knowledge of this "stinking Goddess"? Is your mother a herpotoligist?

well she majored in Biology and zooology at longwood, her mother was a wildlife rehabilitator, she is head of a department in a laboratory, her mother rehabed everything from squirells, to emerald tree monitors, he father was in one of the highest positions in the Dept. of agriculture, and she graduated with honors and she has read all the articles I showed her and she did her own reasearch. So yea I think she is gonna be okay

Thank you see my family is a bunch of smarties well mabye not my dad he thought my Taiwan was venomous

Haha I wanna go to GMU and get a degree in Biology and zoology and minor in crimianl justice. Weird I know a cop with a bunch of snakes. LOL and breed asian rats on the side.

David, I don't know how your going to do this, but.....
Whenever I get a snake, as well as the cursory look over I put them right up to my ear and have a good listen especially if I have had them shipped... I listen for the old popping sound, you know that sound they give out just as an RI is about to start....
I do it with the jungles and they bite, I'm not sure how or if you ought to try with a King Rat. I also look in the mouth for any tell tale mucous.
Being totally separate with you husbandry is only one part of quarantine, you need to know the animal going in is healthy before you start.
