Anyone takes their snake outside ?

Hi, i was wondering if anyone takes their snake in public, i saw some pictures of snakes outside on trees or grass, but does anyone take a walk with a snake around thier neck or hand ?

is it dangerous to take your snake outside ? could he catch any diseases ?

can it be illegal to take you snake in public ? I mean people can bring their dog in public, why couldn't we bring our pet too :p

well i'd imagine alot of people wouldn't enjoy a snake wrapped around your neck, since people have some weird hang-up with snakes. as for the legality, i wouldn't think there would be any laws prohibiting it, but i suppose it just depends on where you live.

Be careful!!!

A lot of the new legislation to ban exotics has been due to someone taking their snake out into public areas. Someone complains about it and the law comes into place.

If you take them outside, which I do, make sure it's in your own yard and, if you can, try not to let others see what you are doing, unless of course they know about your snakes and are cool with it.

ok i know what you mean

but is it dangerous to let your snake go out in the yard ? i mean they could catch something and they are pretty damn fast so how do you make sure they dont go away ?

They dont get away because you keep a damned close eye on them!! I once took Java into the back garden for a snake-about on the grass. I looked away for a few seconds watching some pidgeons and when I looked back Java's front half had dissapeared BENEATH the lawn!!! I had to pull up some grass to get him out, and needless to say, mom wasnt pleased.

I take my snake on walks

I take my snake outside. She seems to enjoy it. She is 3 feet long so she is not easily lost. She cruises around in the grass and garden. Likes to check things out. I walk her once or twice a week. She just likes the new atmosphere, new smells, etc.

I take mine with me to places, but it depends on where it is. I don't usually worry if I take her to the pet store to get some supplies, but I wouldn't take her into a supermarket where the health department would have issues. I kept her discreetly hidden when I had to run to pick up some jeans that were on order for me. I went to the pet store, and then there. Just kept her hidden under the shirt I wore over my T-shirt. The kids next door insist on seeing her everyday just about, so she is outside with them for at least a short time each day (barring after feeding days). I had Maya out back with me today. They seem to enjoy being outside. Had the same grass burrowing problem with C.S. that you did beginner......

My young 'uns both do the under-lawn thing, too.
Almost lost one last week! She was half in/under, and I got her tail. I just help her and slowly (but not very slowly) moved her gently side-to side at about 70 degrees each way.
When she slipped a little, she gave up and backed out of the thatch. Lucky me.
I would be afraid to injure the snake while pulling up the grass... I'd opt for the patient route to recovery.

I took some of my Corns outside in my garden to take photos under natural light! I let my Anery Corn have a little snake about in the grass but I think I would have lost it if I let go of it! :uhoh:

One more thought...

I never take mine out until they are almost 2 years old. That way they are big enough for me to watch without worrying too much if they start to burrow under the grass.

Things like this make me mad. If I go Bi*ch about some ones cat does that mean that they will make laws against cats?

**I really don't have a problem with cats or any animals just using it as an example at how humans have pre-consieved thoughts and how they can't understand anything away from the normal way of life.**

Gerrrrr I need to stop or I could go on forever.

that sux!!!

In response to the whole new legislation thing, that sucks!!! They have no right to ban exotics, especially almost completely harmless ones like corns. I am not going to prance into a supermarket with my snake, but if I am outside I should be able to take him anywhere I d*** well please! You are probably more likely to be hurt by someone's dog thana cornsnake, and it is rediculous for anyone to say we can't take our pets where we want outside in public areas. I hope that you fellow snake owners don't start hiding out, this is a free country (the u.s.) and hopefully you can take your snakes where u want elsewhere in the world, and if not, that's bull! I just finished taking my snake with me on my walk and if the people around me didn't like it, they can kiss my a**, but they sure CAN'T go make a law banning him!

I think it's up to us (the snake owners) to help educate the public and help them understand that snakes are beneficial, and beautiful, fascinating creatures. Most people fear what they don't understand.

Actually, they can make a law banning him, unfortunately.

You're right, we should be able to take our snakes wherever we want, just as if they were dogs, but the fact is that MANY people are afraid of snakes, merely because they were raised to fear them.

If one person complains to "the right person", a law can be written that bans these animals, maybe before you even know that it was being considered as a law. Granted most of the laws were put in place to keep people from owning the big snakes like reticulated pythons, etc., but some of the laws merely say a "constrictor snake" is illegal. (From what I've heard, the "no constrictor" bans originally meant no Boa Constrictors, but in the years since the laws were made, law makers have decided to use the actual definition of "constrictor" in an effort to make more snakes illegal, without rewriting the law.)

Amanda E, I would give a lot to be back in the land of that kind of grass and those kind of leaves. Nice pic.
As a transplant from MI living in FL, I can tell you the vegetation here is ALL WRONG.

But I get angry when I hear someone say "hide". I mean no disrespect... But that is just wrong. You should never hide.
Of course, I'm not saying shove your snake in your neighbor's face, either... There is balance to be sought.

Tyretosmom and snakegrrl... RIGHT ON!!
In a democracy, the majority opinion rules, but isn't necessarily wise or just... So people with the RIGHT opinions need to stand up and voice 'em... And be leaders. And yeah, TRY to educate the masses. So if you believe in something... SAY IT!

MegF... You said it! When my snakes are big enough, I'll have them out plenty. A little PR can go a long way. And it'll have to, 'cause some folks are scared silly by snakes.

Amanda E, I suspect OH may be one of the toughest places in the US to keep a non-traditional viewpoint of ANY kind.
So I can understand not wanting to call down the wrath of the powers-that-be... But I still think you'd be wrong to simply roll over.

I'd consider it a matter of principle and fight to the last penny in my wallet... Send me to jail! My one phone call will go to Channel 7 news! But not everyone is as belligerent nor as foolish as me.

I hate to be the party pooper...

But leave it to the stodgy conservative old timer to give advice that'll sound like yourgrandpa talking:

Taking your snake into the outdoors for a photo is your choice. You could have it escape or at least come close enough that it's a traumatic experience for you both getting out from under that sod, etc. You know that is a possibility when you do so. Your choice.

But bringing one out with you in public is downright irresponsible! I'm in agreement that our pet of choice is much maligned by the general public, world over. And that people should be educated about and more acceptable of snakes. But bringing yours wrapped around your neck in a public place is only asking for trouble. Some people are simply terrified of snakes. Seeing you in the grocery store with one is not going to help that at all! Not to mention, corns aren't the laziest of animals and you will have to reel it in with your hands when it gets warm or restless. This is going to draw attention to you and likley frighten others (even it just being in your arms or draped around your neck). And I can assure you that the animal would prefer to be inside it's hide this whole time. You know, this is eactly the the type of behavior that creates these arcane, backwards "exotic pet" laws in the first place!

Once it was a loose Burmese that ate a poodle, then a creep who walked on a crowded elevator with a boa or some crap. MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION FOR THE HOBBY GUYS! It's really simple... Take care of your animals. Keep them securely caged. Show the neighbors who would find them interesting, don't bring it up around the ones it would probably frighten. Do presentations at schools, scout troops, churches, boys and girls clubs and teach people. Don't be confrontational and do anything that would drive people even further away. Bottom line is, you don't have to treat having snakes like it's something to be ashamed of, but you neededn't flaunt it. My 2 cents....

stand up for you snake!

I know that it is possible for them to make a law banning snakes, I'm not that nieve... I was just saying that they shouldn't have the right to! I have never gone into a crouded elevator with my snake, or taken him into the grocery store. I mean outside, say for a walk in the park or down the street or whatever. I don't think that people should flaunt their snakes and make the fear of them worse; I think that we shouldn't have to hide in a corner, like some of the earlier posts said, when we have the right to be outside with them. My snake seems to enjoy being outside, and so do the others - I wouldn't want to be in the same tank all the time, would you? I know people need to compromise, I just don't think acting ashamed of your snake and hiding them away is the answer! Stand up with your snake and be proud of them!

I guess my posts were taken to sound like I want people to hide their snakes.

Not so.

I take my snakes outside. I don't try to keep my neighbors from seeing them but I also don't advertise that they are out with me. That's all I was saying to do... don't advertise them.

As far as taking them off your property, the only time the snakes leave my property, they are going to educational displays and they are transported in a snake bag, not around my shoulders.

elrojo, even though you sound like a stodgy old timer, I'd have to agree with you 100%. In fact, reading your post made me think of my other hobby (way of life!) - Hunting. "Make a good impression for the hobby guys!" hits the nail on the head!
