Aquatic Egg ID Please

I didn't see the female, but now I am going to be looking! It's pretty dark out there- there's just the little LED lantern that Wilbur the Wasp lives in. I could see the toad's silhouette, though, and ran in and got the camera!

In my parents big koi pond, they have frog and toad eggs in there every summer. Most of them are layed in the top pond (approx 200 gallons), but a few do manage to find their way down the streams to the large bottom pond (approx 5,000+ gallons) and get gobbled up. They haven't noticed any adverse health effects on them.

Wilbur the Wasp......lives in the lantern.........Nanci you are so lovely!!! :)

I can just imagine you sitting in that chair with one of your books and a glass of wine, with all those wonderful creatures to keep you company, sounds like a little bit of heaven to me :D

This is Wilbur. We had a little war a week or two ago, and I tried to erradicate him. Well, really, just persuade him to make his home elsewhere. Then I noticed he was missing a limb, and of course felt sorry for him. So as long as he follows the rules, he can stay. No stinging. No breeding. No dive bombing my head when I'm out there reading. No inviting friends over. That's pretty much it.

You must spread some rep before giving it to Nanci again, blah, blah, blah.........I haven't repped you in what seems like ages.............

As long as he follows the rules............;) Thank you for the photo, I now have a complete picture of your evening at the water garden :D

Nanci - FWIW I believe that wasp would be a female....and that tiny nest will be where she lays her eggs and hatches the next brood of workers. Once you see the cells capped off, it's only a matter of time before one wasp will become 5....etc etc.

She is lovely, just keep an eye on her!!

Wilburina!! At that time, I will probably wait till night and pull up the whole stake and move it somewhere else. That species has had a nest in the tortoise pen every year and we are very tolerant of each other except if their home (usually a cow skull) gets touched accidentally by the weed whacker. Maybe they aren't the angry, stinging home-defense type!

Nanci,
You probably want to detour the wasp away from your home. Just in case you do not get stung. you never know if you are allergic or not.

Now instead of killing Wilburina I suggest getting the waspinator. Its a fake paper nest that will drive other wasps away. Wasps are territorial and they do not like building nests near others.

This fake nest runs under $10.

I have tadpoles!!

Toadpoles! I don't know when they hatched- it's been raining steadily for several days. I haven't heard the toad recently. They are all still in the area the eggs were laid. I didn't want to search too hard for them and chase them out to where the fish are, but there are many tadpoles under every leaf!
