ASF

I have had ASF since last August and love them, they do so well that I am in the process of phasing out the mice and just keeping ASF. Less stinky, bigger litters, snakes love them. Only cons I can think of is, as mentioned they can be mean, some of mine actually jump to try and bite. I must have an evil strain. They do love to chew and destroy plastic water bottles if they don't have anything else to graw on. And one con I have not seen mentioned, is that some people may not want a snake that is eating ASF out of fear it will not be easy to switch to regular mice. I have noticed that around here some people steer clear of them for this reason. I try to mix up the feedings so that any one snake doesn't always get ASF and forget what mice are.
 
That's a neat idea and I think I am going to COPY you. I promise it will only be for myself though. LOL. I hate how 1/2 eaten blocks get carried everywhere.
 
Go ahead. you don't need anything but 1/4 inch wire mesh, a wire cutter and needle nose pliers. I don't have ANY waste except for a little dust under the hopper. Make sure to make it so that the top goes all the way to the screen top. If you leave a gap at the top, babies will crawl up and in and get stuck or adults will go in and empty the hopper just for fun. This happened more than once before I figured out the issue. I kept going in my room to find an empty hopper and food everywhere. then one day I caught the male from that colony inside carrying food out the top. I'm currently uploading a updated room tour on youtube. I have a closeup of them. I might do a video showing how I make them too. :laugh01: I am still laughing at those hides. You found a really good way to recycle items like those sorry @$$ Petco boxes and KFC chicken tubs. Very good ideas as well. Looks like you have messed around with a lot of items and have found some really cheap and GREAT ideas. Thanks for the video link and all the info.

Cereal boxes, butter tubs and milk jugs cut in half work great too. I'm not will to pay $5 a hide at petco when i can use old trash that works the same. just make sure to clean them.
 
I thought that I might pipe in on this subject, I have been looking to pick up some ASFs, but have not been able to find them around here. Well, I found an ASF Forum, here, and found someone that has ASFs for sale near me(kinda), and I will be picking some up from him at the beginning of May.
 
I want ASFs :( I tried to find breeders anywhere and just got a bunch of info sites. Anyone raise these near KC, MO or Springfield, MO?

How much would I expect to pay for an unrelated pair?
 
I was selling them for $1 each for smalls and $2 each for large. This was the last part of last year and the first of this year. They really are not worth loads of money imo...

Now I really wish I could find a source near me. Wow. I would think when selling to someone for pets or breeders one might charge more.
 
I'm sure there are some that do, when the "boom" hit I know of at least one company that was selling them for $150 a trio. Now they are just another rodent, and not exactly the best choice for larger breeders.

Carnivorouszoo, if you go to the link I posted above, then go to the breeder section, you my be able to find a breeder there..
 
Too bad you guys who want them aren't near me, I usually give them to fellow herpers who want to try feeding/breeding them.

Sorry but ASFs are illegal to own in Missouri, California, and Kentucky.
 
I miss my ASF's. I fostered 7 a year or so ago for about 6months. They are great fun to watch...plenty of energy. Mine hadn't really been humanised so weren't particularly handleable. They tended to nip my arms a little (more out of curiousity I think) when I put my hands in the cage but nothing serious. They go absolutely crazy for crickets, mealworms, waxies, moths and any other bug they can get their little paws on and are great fun to watch hunt....aww I really miss mine now......
 
Yeah I was doing some research on them a while back and came across that info. If you find out otherwise, let me know.
 
It looks like they are but I am waiting to hear back from my local conservation dept. They know way more than my local animal control (who is supposed to know this stuff!)
