Aspen bedding info.........

I just thought I would help out some people and let others know a little information, in case you didn't already. Alot of people buy the bedding from pet stores or dept. stores and end up paying quite a bit. I am one of those who used to do that, sometimes paying like $6 for like a 2 lb. bag at the pet store. I then went to an Expo and found a lady selling big gallon sized ziplock bags stuffed full at 3 for $5 and stocked up. Well, about 2 months ago we had a new feed/tack/ranch store open up in town and even thought I had seen them around the country before, I never went into one of them. Since it was here and just down the street, I thought I would just walk in to see what all they had. What I did find was a BIG bag of Scent-Free Aspen Bedding by a company called Premier Pet. I have found this at the local Tractor Supply here in Texas and I am sure it could be found at other places, but just wanted to share with some of the newer people in case they are having trouble or would like to save a little money. The one that I buy is about 25-30 lbs and packed tightly into a big sealed plastic bag. The quantity on the front says 2.0 cubic feet but it expands to 5.0 cubic feet (because it is tightly packed). Anyway, there are no oils or scents in it and even has the animal usage/changing chart on the back. It runs like $8.49 or so here so I would imagine that it should be the same throughout the country. Even if you don't have a Tractor Supply, you might check into your local feed/ranch store to see if they carry it. I have supplied a pic of the product and a link to the makers website. Hope this might help someone.

Looks just about identical to the one I pick up from my local pet store for 15 or 20 dollars Canadian.

and it may not be a great deal..........i just know that until i found it, i was still paying way too much for bedding. what would that be in american $?

thats the same exact stuff i use...i get it from my local petco..and it is less exspensive then other stuff i've seen.

Yep, I've bought it at Tractor Supply and PetCo...it's about $3 cheaper at Tractor Supply though.
Right now I'm waiting to hear back from someone at Harlan about their aspen "Sani-chips"...to see how much it would cost to have some of that sent to me quarterly or whatever. I really like that stuff. I haven't purchased it in awhile since I only see it at shows and need my husband to come along to carry it out to the car for me.

Just a warning to make sure you get it from the pet aisle and not the horse aisle. The horse stuff tends to be only $5 - $6 for a bag that size, but they also tend to be pine.

good point..........where i go, all three (pine, aspen, cedar) are all on the same isle next to each other. make sure to "read and grab" the correct bag, as aspen is the only one to use.

That reminds me of Super Pet (it's a Canadian chain.) You have to get the aspen from the small animal dept. rather than reptiles, because the bags in reptiles are half the weight for twice the price! Total rip, just because it's labelled differently. Luckilly I only have one 10 gallon so the smallest package in small animals will last me for a loooong time!

My Petco sells this brand of aspen. Its the same price as the big bags of Kaytee brand, but I'd take the Kaytee over Premier Pet any day. Its probably a local thing, but the bags they sell at Petco here, are very dusty and to me, the aspen stinks! Not trying to rain on your parade, Galen, just putting in my 2 cents! :)

I agree...it's not my favorite Aspen to use. And I've also noticed that it seems to be a bit nicer from Tractor Supply vs. Petco. I know it's the same brand / same packaging at each store, but for some reason I've noticed a difference.

no problem at all..............i thank everyone for participating in this thread. i was just trying to get some information out to some people that might not know about it. i am by no means a "paid spokesperson" for this product so even if somebody knows of a better, less dusty (i agree on that) that is out there and affordable, then please post. the only reason i posted this product was because i live in a smaller type town (45,000) and it is what i have found as being the best deal locally, instead of having to drive 45 mins away to San Antonio or Austin.

to be honest..........i would like this thread to be more of a "product comparison" to see what is around the country, the pros and cons, the price differences, what people prefer, etc. that way if a better product is found, then other people can search for it in their area. thanks again for all the different comments and suggestions. :)

Well since you want it to be an informational thread about what is out there, I'll add what we have available here. Kaytee and Premier Pet both offer very large bags of aspen, 2 cu. ft, which expands to 4 cu. ft. for about the same price, usually $12. If you are just using it for snakes, it should last awhile. I use it for my snakes and the rats, and a big bag lasts a few months. We also have hemp bedding which is very expensive for a bag that is a quarter the size of the aspen. I've never used it though, so can't rate it really. We also have something called "Super Shavings", its similar to aspen, but made from various other types of trees. I've used it for rats, but not for my snakes. It comes in much smaller bags. We also have the pelleted bedding, I think its called Critter Country, I don't think it would be very nice for burrowing though. And of course CareFresh, but I would never use that for snakes because it is too drying. Its whole purpose is to absorb moisture, so it would make sheds very difficult I would imagine. Other than that, the rest of the products are either pine, cedar, or recycled paper pellets, which are gross for bedding IMHO.

I love the Kaytee brand too. I get it at PetSmart, same size is 12.99 and when they say dust free, they mean dust free.

I will have to check it out then next time I get around a PetSmart or Petco...........I will agree on the dryness/dustiness of the Premier Pet. It would be a little more (12.99 to 8.99) and smaller in size (4 cu ft to 5 cu ft) if I understand correctly, but it might be worth it to get better sheds and less dust around the house when I change it.

Yeah, they sell that Aspen at every Petco---and it's crap. It's that chip stuff--at least in CT and Florida, and blah.

Go to Petsmart and buy the Kaytee shredded aspen. $10 for 4 or 5 cu feet. Two bags lasts me a few months---and that's with 30 snakes on aspen.

Cool............thats 3 votes for Kaytee. Never heard of it but I will give it a try. Thanks everyone.

Never used it gwb, but I have heard of it... I was warned when I had birds not to use their bird feed because it wasn't correctly balanced :) I'll have to have a look for their aspen myself if it's truly dust free :)

Hey Joe, I was wondering. I usually use the small presspacks of the kaytee shredded aspen and loved it. I couldn't find it anywhere locally in anything bigger than 56 liter and even that was VERY expensive. Now that I have a considerable number of snakes I needed a much larger bag. So I searched the internet and kaytee product info which said they had the 2 and 5 cubic foot bags. In all the pictures the bags looked identical to the small one, ie same label etc. But when I ordered in the 2 cubic foot bag I got a big surprise.

The shavings seem much larger and it's mixed with a lot of the darker bark coloured bits?!? I checked and re-checked the labels and it SHOULD be the same but it's not quite. Please look at the following pictures and tell me if this is what you are getting in the states..

This is what I was EXPECTING

Maybe I will just have to put up with the darker looking shavings. I know they are still extremely low if not truly dust free. I also know it's just the bark pieces that look dark and it's not actually dirty, just not sorted like I think the smaller bags may be. Do you know if the snakes can burrow as easily through the larger shavings?

Thanks
Rebecca

PLEASE ANYONE WITH EXPERIENCE WITH THIS MATTER LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! :)

I think the larger shavings are just some tree bark that got thrown in there. I have them in my big bags of Kaytee aspen too. A lot of times, I end up picking them out and tossing them because half the time I can't tell what they are. I freak out and think its a regurge or something!

So you use the larger bags of kaytee as well? Are you in the states? I would like to know if the americans are getting the exact same product as the canadians or not. Do your large bags look like what I got?

Rebecca

ps - if this is the same as yours how do you find the burrowing aspect. Do the burrows hold their shape as well as the smaller grain aspen they pack in the smaller bags?
