Astro turf for substrate.

Would useing astro truf( that green stuff they use in minture golf) be all right for substrate, many corn snake sites and other snake guides in general reccomend it, but i though id ask you guys first.
 
Astro turf has disadvantages, mainly b/c it's difficult to keep clean compared with using aspen shavings and can harbor bacteria. I use it sometimes for diffficult baby feeders so I can put a pinky in their habitat without disturbing them or worrying that they will eat aspen shavings, the trick is to have two and rotate, clean and disinfect one thoroughly and have it dry and ready to replace the other one when it gets soiled.
 
Substrate has been a big issue for me lately because I'm trying to decide what to use for my first snake when I get it. I've asked a lot of questions, and have gotten varied answers, except for one thing.

Everybody's pretty much in agreement that turf isn't good because it holds water and is a great place for bacteria to grow.
 
I'd never use that astro turf stuff. It looks aweful, is hard to keep clean and stops the snake from burrowing. The only thing a can agree with is using it for hatchlings as shed'n my skin said.

It really isn't that bad if you take care of it. I have three for each viv. Cleans and disinfects easily, no bugs, I never have to worry about buying another bag somewhere, it comes in several colors. Some say it is not natural but there are not many piles of clean wood chips in the wild. It is all just a matter of choice. I know some breeders who use nothing but newspaper. To each his/her own, try what sounds best to you but know there are alternatives. JMO

There's always one..

- or in this case two. I also use it and have had no problems whatsoever. I feed my snake in his vivarium (no problems there either) and was terrified he would swallow loose substrate, which is why I went for it in the first place. And I thought it looked a wee bit better than paper towels/newspaper.

When he was a baby I kept a sweater box inside the viv with aspen and a hide, mostly just to help him feel secure, and he rarely used it preferring to roam around or sit in plants. Eventually I just took the sweater box out.
