Axanthic Hognose Transformation

I definitely like the faded axanthic look much, much more than the bright contrasty axanthic. (Maybe because it looks like the lavender!!) I guess the snow is my favorite of all.

pssssst
hey, how much you gonna sell those snows for, when they happen?

Well, Brian was offered $7500 for one and he turned it down. Considering that axanthics currently sell between $4-5000, I can tell you that snows won't be very affordable for quite a while. It will be interesting to see who else produces the snows besides Brian, I know a few people out there that are trying but so far they have not had much luck.

Ya, I heard about the 7500 offer. I tell my friends I want a $7500 snake and they think I'm crazy. But hey, they last longer than a car ever would and you need to replace parts.

All the hog morphs seem plain compared to corns, and so much more expensive. Gah. Maybe I'll get a plain ol' amel hoggie in a few years.

Beautiful Pair of axantic's!!!:cool::cheers:
They would've been out much sooner had the USF&W not confiscated one that Brian had awhile back.They claimed it was from Colorado,where they are protected. I'm pretty certain Brian had a leucistic too at that time.:shrugs:

I talked to Brian last fall and the story he told me was just about the leucistic hoggie mess from Colorado that he had gotten involved in, he made no mention about any snows during that period. So yes, he did have leucistics a few years ago, but my understanding is that he didn't have any snows at that time. He explained to me that the reason it took so long to do the snow project was that out of the 3 wc axanthics he had (which took a few years to get), I believe 2 had died and he was only able to work with the last one he had. Perhaps I misheard him somewhere down the line, if you've ever talked to Brian on the phone, you know how excited he can get when he gets to talking :rofl:

WOW!!! Those are awesome! I've wanted to get into the hognose projects for quite sometime...just can't find the ingredients (besides albinos) anywhere. I really, REALLY, like your axanthics! I've seen leucistics in person and they are pretty cool too....wish they were still available on the pet market!

On a bit of a sad note, a few weeks ago our female Bicolor South American hoggie died under strange circumstances. I was brumating her and the male along with my adult Westerns and everybody seemed to be doing fine, then one day I was checking on them and saw her on her side with her mouth full of rabbit pellets (which I have used as a substrate for 15 years). It seems as though she might have tried to eat a bunch of them and they lodged in her throat.

Sorry, but it is unlikely she was trying to eat the pellets in brumation. More likely, she was crawling around and gaping resulting in receiving a mouth full of pellets. Whatever was "hurting" the snake causing the gaping is what killed her. You almost never find a large snake dead without it either having a mouth full of substrate OR biting itself. Again, sorry, but I don't think it is likely the substrate was the ultimate cause of death.

Granted, it might have accidentally got a piece in its mouth and then got a mouth full while trying to get that one piece out, but even THAT is unlikely as compared to the above scenario. Snakes occasionally die during brumation, and I don't think we can avoid it. Not all live animals are built perfectly, and the stress of brumation seems to be one time those internal flaws become a real problem. Thankfully, we've only lost one in brumation in the last few years, but when we had 450 breeders, I'd say I lost at least one every 2 years. I don't know for sure, though - that's been a decade ago!

Sorry I did confuse the leucistics with the snow. :shrugs: It's been a couple years since I've talked to Brian in person, He had just hatched the first batch of het snows. He gets very excited especially if you bring up the Redwings!:)
