Whatever, Ty. You go on believing in your moral superiority. I'll go on believing you're a huckster who goes to the extreme to save his PC image.
:roflmao:

A typical response...I'll leave well enough alone. There simply is no getting through to some people...

Hey guys.. enough is enough.. I just want to place this reminder.
I am not a mod but seriously this is getting out of hand.
7) CROSSING THE LINE - Members who let disagreements get out of hand, post inflammatory responses (personal attacks), or use foul language will receive a 3-Day ban from the forum. This is a time to cool down, collect your thoughts, and come back and become a valuable contributor to the community. If it happens again, you will receive a permanent ban. It may seem harsh, but rules have to be in place to keep the forum a positive place free of animosity amongst its members.

Ty's approach just amuses me.

SkyChimp: It's a stupid tradition because it unnecessarily maims snakes and perpetuates myths that leads to human deaths.

Ty: It's wrong, but I don't want to be to harsh because it might hurt someone's feelings.

It's the United Nations approach to rendering an opinion - just enough initimate disagreement, but not enough to cause you to have to have to take a stand. It's the sort of mindset leading to the tragedy in Dafur. The UN acknowledges thousands are being murdered and driven from their homelands based on ethnic values, but can't call it genocide because then we'd have to do something about it. It's a way to 'appear' concerned, but not having to expend any energy doing it.

Can't rep you Ty, so I'll just put out a public kudos. Good on you for trying to enlighten someone about showing some modicum of respect for foreign cultures. Absolutely agree with every point you've made, and also agree that no matter how many other ways you say it, he will never understand the point you're trying to make, so best to just let this whole thing end. Unfortunately, this is why americans will continue to be hated around the globe. You can be against an act without insulting the people. How do you think terrorist leaders convince people to blow themselves up for a "cause"? They take a statement like the earlier one and emphasize the part(s) that helps their "cause". Just more fuel on the fire.

I think Rattlesnake Roundups are a STUPID tradition. Does that make me a bigot? Wait- I'm white...but I'm from Up North...Stupidity is stupidity, animal cruelty is animal cruelty- doesn't matter who the perpetrator is.

I'm with you there Nanci, and would like to add English foxhunting, Spanish fiesta celebrations by throwing donkeys or goats off high buildings, bear baiting in Pakistan, dog and cock fighting anywhere and cricket fighting in indonesia as cruel, unnecessary and, in my opinion, STUPID traditions.

Are you ladies having fun fishing?

I've said my peace, and won't be baited back to an argument. If you want my response to what you two ladies just posted, you're welcome to go back read the thread again. What I wrote is still there for anyone that wants to read it.

Enjoy!!

It's like this, folks...

I could sit here and spout off for HOURS about American and Christian "traditions" or "rites" or "rituals" that I think are "stupid" simply because I don't understand them or agree with them. But I don't. And why don't I? Because there is simply no reason for me to be publicly derogatory towards an entire culture of individuals simply because I disagree with their beliefs and practices.

Truthfully...I feel SORRY for anyone that cannot understand that, and cannot comprehend that simple modicum of respect that ALL people should display towards ALL other people.

Plain and simple, really...the argument is over, the debate is pointless, and the further baiting is childish...

No I'm not fishing, or trying to bait anyone. I'm stating that I think certain traditional activities from various cultures are stupid and cruel.
What I did not say is that I think those cultures or even the people who take part in those activities are stupid. To disagree with a practise is not to be derogatory towards a whole culture.
It's my choice to express my opinions, as long as I'm not being rude or inflammatory. I have not denigrated any member here for their expressed opinions and would appreciate the same courtesy in return.

If we wanted to bait you Chris, we'd just dangle a homeless snake! I think you're one of the clearest thinkers here, who cares enough to take the time to write a well thought out opinion on any subject, and the reiterate if necessary.

...To disagree with a practise is not to be derogatory towards a whole culture....

You are absolutely right. 100% in agreement with you.

However, to call a cultural tradition "stupid", IS being derogatory towards that culture. A tradition is just that...the historical belief or ritual that a particular group or society practice with regularity. A culture that is not as "advanced" or "civilized" as our society WILL have cultural traditions that we regard as cruel, unusal, confusing, or bordering on illegal. But those distinctions are only made through our perception of those traditions. To say publicly that those traditions are stupid, is derogatory towards the culture that practices those traditions with the same fervor as American Christians practice their own.

You may as well call the people practicing those traditions stupid. If the tradition is stupid, than the people practicing, by way of logic, must be stupid, too, because they do not realize how stupid their tradition is. THAT is deragatory and inflammatory towards an entire culture of people.

It's simply not nice, and should NOT be a part of regular communication, IMO...

I apologize to both of you for mis-interpreting your intentions. It felt like a bait, but I apologize for my reaction.

Warnings!

The worst part about being a mod is having to read a bunch of crap that doesn't interest me in the slightest. This thread is a good example.

Rule 7 was broken all over the place. If any of the following quotes belongs to you, consider yourself warned. You can discuss things passionately, but let's keep things civil.

I don't care what you think in your little mind.

You are thicker than a brick wall and more stubborn than a child...

Sorry, my friend, you're PC BS isn't cutting it.

I cannot have a battle of the wits with an unarmed individual...

I was wondering how long this would go on before big papa Dean would come along. Wow, first thread i make when i come back starts an argument....

I'm making my public apology to SkyChimp and the rest of the forum for my participation in allowing this thread to "cross the line". I sometimes let my emotions get the better of me, like any other human, and I don't control my words as much as I should.

So my apologies for crossing the line and becoming "inflammatory" in some of my responses, both to those who had to read it, and to SkyChimp, to whom it was directed.
