Bark question

CAV

Dazed and Cornfused
No, it isn't about dogs......:)

Has anyone tried washing, drying and reusing Repti-bark (or similar substrate)?

I am looking for a way to reduce husbandry cost and was curious if this is practical, cost effective and healthy. (No, I'm not cheap, just managing a herd of 32 corns) ;)

I use aspen substrate. the only time I replace my substrate is when my snake goes poop. and I only replace that area. That's what the guy at the pe store told me. If you want to save some money you can put sand down then put a thin layer of Repti-bark. Or even just papertowl. I hope that helps.

How to re use repti bark

Hi I re use my repti bark and it work great. You will have to replace it completely every six to twelve months. You can tell when there is a strong odor. I also keep a few snakes so it gets exspensive especially that repti bark isnt that cheap. The way I clean it is a little time consuming but not to bad. I put it in a rubbermaid or something similiar then run water through it to get the poop off. After that I fill up the rubbermaid with hot water and bleach I then let it soak for a good half hour. Next I give it a good washing to make sure all the bleach is off. You can dry it any way but I find it the fastest and easyest to drain the water then put it in those disposable tin pans and baked it for about 45 minutes just keep checking it. It will feel a little damp no matter how long you cook it just take it out and let the rest air dry. Also half way through stir the bottom so it dries.
Hope this helps if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I used it too and just bleached it

I used to use repti bark for my displays. I fished out the poo coved bits and then I used a 10% (or so, not like I measured) bleach/water solution for an hour, then soaked it in water with a splash of vinegar to neutralize the bleach, soaked in plain water, rinsed, and put in a collander (sp?; speghetti strainer) in the sun for a day. I used it until it didn't have that nice woody smell and looked like cork.
I actually liked it pretty well, but found the local greenhouse had bulk fir, aspen, whatever I needed-far cheaper and I could sift out the big chunks. You may want to check that out
