I got some money for my birthday this month (Dec. 10) so I just ordered my first Red-tail boa! I am so excited! My boyfriend's going to be mad hehe :grin01: But I got a good deal on him.... I didn't want to spend all kinds of money on something I'm just testing the waters with. I have been looking and LOOKING through ads...all the "homo some morph, het 5 other morphs, possibly het 10 other morphs...." or "locality1 X locality2 X species3..." I just want a normal!!! :sidestep: Now I know what people who want JUST A CORN SNAKE go through LOL!

But anyways, I got a normal Columbian male. I can't post a pic yet, but he's on this site...

scroll down to M1M5 (definately needs a new name! :crazy02: ) He's got great color for his price, compared to all the other ads I looked at. I don't really understand what's "desirable" and not in red-tails yet....as far as the higher and lower prices...but he's "desirable" to me  and he'll help me learn.

Any suggestions on what to expect from boa owners? I've been doing research of course, but there's always things you don't realize until you have it. Only snakes I've ever had are corns. I know, it will hurt much more when he bites  but that's fine. Hopefully if I get him used to me enough, he won't. I have a feeling this little guy is going to be BABIED :)

You picked a good "next snake". Redtails in general aren't that nippy or picky with the food.....I'm sure you'll love him.

I've read a lot of caresheets from that site. I like that fact that she tries to scare most people away from getting the chosen animal....considering so many are taken care of wrong or neglected.

It says, though, that an adult should be fed rabbits and chickens....I read from a few breeders' sites that this isn't necessary. In fact one said it makes them healthier to not try to achieve the the biggest size you can. I definately don't want it to get gigantic (one reason I got a male) and I want it to be as healthy as possible. I don't want him just so I can say "hey, look at my huge snake!" (I already can do that with Steve, the gi-normous corn snake LOL) Do most boa owners agree with feeding in moderation, or is it a topic of disagreement? :shrugs:

Congrats and a happy belated birthday! Looking forward to the pictures! I love boas and many pythons but I hesitate to own the larger varieties and boids are prohibited in the province we will be moving to within the next year or two, unless you have a zookeeper's permit and plan to exhibit the animals. I'd love to do that, but it gets expensive!

I agree. I wanted a larger snake as well, but not a gigantic one. I went with a male Columbian Red Tailed for my "next size up" snake as well. I think they're beautiful and I am excited for having a larger snake. I'm definitely not going to push his food items though!

So, _was_ boyfriend mad?? New guy is very pretty- I looked at his website today.

I'm the opposite- I want all mine to stay babies forever!
