Best way to defrost a pinky or fuzzys ???

I leave mine either on a spare heat mat for an hour or two (depending on how big the mouse is), or on top of the radiator for half an hour (gets hotter). Pinkies will defrost in 5-10 minutes on a radiator.

I put mine in hot tap water, as hot as it comes out of the tap (which isn't very at my apartment). If they are totally squishie, they are thawed. Takes only a couple minutes for a pinkie, longer for larger mice. Usually I forget about them for about 15 minutes, then remember I have snake food thawing, and by then it's ready and not too hot. Dry off & serve!

Ok cool thanks I was told on another site it's bad to put them in hot water but I couldn't see how so I will put them in hot/warm water for an hour from now on thanks. My guys are on medium fuzzies.(fat fuzzies)

i have always placed them into hot water, sometimes in a bag and sometimes not
if you do it like that it doesn't take too long, i think 15-20 mins for a large mouse would be plenty

that being said, in the FAQ at rodentpro (where i bought mine) they offer this

rodentpro's faq said:
Q: How do I thaw out the frozen feeder animals?
A: It is important to only offer fully defrosted prey items as a food source. We recommend a slow room temperature thawing process. We discourage a rapid thawing process utilizing means of high heat such as a microwave or hot water, as this method often distorts the physical integrity of the food item. Warming the food item to slightly above room temperature is acceptable. This slight warming can be achieved by placing the food item in a clean plastic bag and floating it in luke warm water. This slight warming will make the food item smell more strongly, and thus more attractive, which may be especially important when feeding reluctant feeders.

I have always defrosted at room temperature. If I can remember, I pull whaterever I need and place it in the refrigerator the day/night before. That way it defrosts a little faster. Usually takes 3-4 hours at room temp.

^^gross haha

I usually let them sit at room temperature for a little (while I'm changing the water or picking out poo from the cage) then I run hot faucet water over them a couple times till they're squishy. Very scientific, I know.

I take a cup or bowl large enough and put water in it, nuke the water for about a minute (more for fuzz or bigger) drop the mouse right in. Then I set a timer for 15 minutes, when it goes off the mouse is warm and defrosted I sloosh the excess water off and give it to the snake in its feed box. So far only one of my snakes has been doing rejections but that is the 05 amel whose gender is under suspiscion.

I put my pinks in a ziplock back and run hot water over the bag. Sometimes I just fill up a cup of hot water and put the pinkie in there. Either way works good for me.

is it wrong to defrost in hot water? i have always boiled the kettle, filled a mug then added the mouse for 10 mins then removed the mouse to cool down for 1 min before feeding to my snake. i have done this with pinkies up to adults and never had a problem.

I would never think to use boiling water to thaw a pinky. Perhaps a larger mouse would work better to soak up all that heat. Remember, flesh starts to cook around 130+ degrees. Boiling water is way higher than that. Have you used this method for smaller mice like pinkies? Seems like you could cook a pinky in boiling water. A larger mouse may do better in that environment, but I don't know...haven't gotten there yet.

If you thaw at room temp, how long to thaw for a pinkie?

Usually takes 2-4 hours at room temp. My room temp. in the snake room is around 73-75 degrees. I always check the head to see if they are ready. If the head is still noticably cold they aren't ready yet.

I have a handy 30 second button on my microwave I use to defrot my pinkies. Microwave water for 30 seconds, then put the pinkies in. I found a minute actually makes the water to hot I would defrost at room temp but I also have cats O.O They already like to sniff and take a drink from the mouse water now and then lol.

yeah i have used this to defrost pinkies too, i only put them in for 2 mins tho. i didnt think that i would cook the mouse, it certainly hasnt done my snakes any harm.
