Best way to house 30 youngsters?

RyanR

Canadian Boa Fanatic.
Alright, Well first time breeding corns this year, and i have aprx 30 good eggs, and they are due in 2 weeks give or take, i would like to get everything set up right soon, now i did not invest in a hatchling rack.. well because if i did that i would want to keep some,, and i just cant do that,, lol

so what is the best way to house 30 babies for there first couple meals + shed

also.. im looking for a fairly cheap way.. since i might be getting rid of my breeder corns so the viv or containers may never be used again

Gladware (or the rip off version of it). Get the containers that are about 4" x 6" x 4". They're usually pretty cheap at Walmart and you can drill little holes in them for ventilation. Condiment dishes make great water dishes and paper towel for a substrate. You can also cut up paper towel/toilet paper rolls for hides. The Gladware containers have the added bonus of being dishwasher safe for cleaning afterwards (for the non-major messes anyway).

P.S. - They stack too!

if you shop around you can find shoe box racks and rubbermaid/sterilite shoe boxes that fit great. also you can use craigslist or KS.com to find racks.

I get bins from the dollar store. Have gotten water dishes, too. One year, i got little bowls, 4 for $1. I also get little plastic ash trays (2 for $1) to use for hides.

wow i like that rack.. how much did it cost to fully set it up
(minus the heating since the snakes will be in a heated room)

It's one of two custom built Cornsnake Hatchling racks I had Alan Hall of Jungle Habitats Plastics build for me. You would have to contact him on price.

If you know a thing-or-two about being handy you can custom build one yourself cheap! This year I built my first one this year (and I'm no handyman) for only about $100 for shelving and hardware (screws). It houses 24 plastic shoeboxes, but of course if you used the rubbermaid tubs you could house quite a few more. I just bought 15" wide melamine and had homedepot cut the pieces to the length I needed. They sell melamine in 10" and 12" also... which is cheaper... so if you used the rubbermaid tubs, you could get the narrower melamine. Copy and paste the link below. This is where I got my ideas from. I didn't build this identical rack, but very similar. That's why it's great to custom build one... you get exactly what you want!
