Bite Club renewal

qtken2

Oh you know!!!
I got this girl a bit over a week ago. She is an established WC. Seems like she was rubbing her nose during travel, none of her pics before I got her looked like that. For such a calm species, I get an individual that is the opposite.

Membership now good for another year!

OUCH ! LOL ! Great picture....Im still not a member, Im not sure if I want to be or not but that's an amazing looking animal.

Let me add to you4 comment about a species being calm, I had a Ball Python years ago that turned mean, I mean.....mean ! So mean I had to get rid of him.

Im got to be honest, they do look amazing but I really don't want anything that's going to bite me every time I handle it.

I hope to never get bit, but know I eventually will. The odds increase with each snake. Not gonna lie, I'm sort of jealous of the bite club. Luckily, not jealous enough to actually antagonize a bite.

LOL...I feel ya, Its bitter sweet.

I do have a question for the people that have been bitten, If your snake latched on and doesn't want to let go, how do you get him to release?

Honestly, on my FB page people are debating it and some use alcohol, this seems cruel to me, what's the best way to get a snake to release that wont let go?

Cool to slightly warm water worked for me. My King Ghidorah latched on really good the last time he bit into me. When he refused to release I eased him into my bathroom sink and started with cool running water and gently increased the temperature until he let go. It was quite an experience, one I'd like to not repeat. It's made me more reluctant to let others handle him. I've been trying to spend more one on one time with him to make sure he knows my scent over mice. I think he's back to normal but you've got to remain cautious.

Thanks Dan, I try to handle every one of my snakes at least for 10 minutes every night unless they have just eaten, I wash my hands before and after I handle them, I've yet to be bitten but I am sure my time will come, I'm just trying to prepare myself for that day.

Ever need stitches from a bite?

I try to handle King first since he's more likely to bite me. I've never needed stitches but he has drawn blood from me. I don't think one is ever ready for that first bite. It usually catches all by surprise including the biter. It doesn't hurt much depending on the size of the snake of course. If I had to get bit I think I'd choose to be bitten by a corn or king since their mouths and teeth are the tiniest. King's latest bite felt like being stuck by tiny needles, it wasn't deep but since he wouldn't let go it was like being caught on a very small fish hook. Just have to remain calm after the initial shock of a strike.

I've only ever had to use something twice, to get a snake to release. Once my adult female Rosy boa mistook my hand for a mouse and clamped on and started to constrict, pouring room temp water over her got her to release almost immediately. Then my husband got bit by Kaylee, our adult female BRB, the largest snake we currently have, and water did not work on her! It was a very painful bite because she grabbed a chunk of the flesh on his arm, pulled it out and then kept trying to twist it, he was afraid it was going to tear at any moment. So I poured mouth wash in her mouth and she let go immediately. She was very pissed off about it too. Not something I'd recommend for the first thing to try, but it is always effective if you can't get one off any other way.
Like I said, it was very painful but only because of the way she was twisting his skin, the actual punctures were like a moderately bad cat scratch and didn't hurt much after she let go.

Ive been bitten by every snake species I've had; Corns, Hogs, GBKs, GTPs, Balls, and now a Rhino. GTP was the worse probably due to the area, 4 strikes on my left wrist. My wrist was swollen for a few days. Only 2 snakes ever latched on. 1st was a female albino hog with an insane feeding response. Every time I opened her cage it was feeding time even when she just ate an adult mouse. She caught my left thumb, I didn't want to let her hang on and take pics so I just went to my bathroom faucet and ran cool water. That got her off instantly. 2nd was that rhino that got me defensively but seemed to turn into feeding due to that fact she started working her way to the end of my thumb. Got her off the same as the hog.

When a snake (colubrid) latches on to me, the first thing I do is blow hard in their face. It works most of the time with hatchlings and some of the time with juvi's to adults. I agree, mouth wash or foam soap works every time. I wet my finger with the wash or soap and touch the corner of their mouth with it. If I'm at a show or store and neither is available then a get I credit card and gently slide it between the snakes upper jaw and my hand.

The king that's biting me in the pic is actually a really nice guy. :)

I guess I'm good for another year. Silly girl thought I was food and just ate yesterday.

My adult albino hognose has been ravenous lately. She literally leaped out of her bin and bit me a couple of weeks ago. They're so cute looking even when they are biting you LOL.
