black belly's by tessera ????

Not a tessera fan, but the genetics on this are very interesting. And I have to admit, I do kind of like that wide perfect stripe on the dorsal side.
 
After seeing that picture I believe that Tessera is a true co-dominant mutation. Sure, it's not an astoundingly different super-form but it is still a co-dominant. Much like how the Enchi and Super Enchi Ball Python looks very similar but the Super Enchi is indeed a Super.

BUT you can't say something is Co-Dom by JUST looking at a picture. It will take rasining up the animals and breeding them to prove out that idea. It also doesn't explain why KJ & I or Don DIDN'T see animals like that when we did Tessera X Tessera breedings.

He purchased/exported his Tesseras from Don. Both were from Tessera outcrossings (One was het bloodred...the other was het something else)... so there's no chance his breeders were from Tessera X Tessera breedings.

SOMETHING COOL IS GOING ON... and it's going to take time & breedings to sort out.

Oh, of course not. I have geckos right now that I'm sure are a new morphs, but until I breed it out they are normals. As far as we know the Tessera mutation is a Dominant mutation and until one of those fancy animals is bred to another Tessera and we get something like 2/4 Supers and 2/4 Tesseras it's a co-dominant. Heck it could be some other gene screwing with the color, but that black belly is just too cool! Maybe I'll have to buy myself a pair of Tesseras!

He is VERY nice- honest- and a super breeder. He has some outstanding animals! (Keep up the great work Will!!!!!)

In 2010 I bought 1.1 Tessera from Don Soderberg.

1.0 = Tessera - from Tessera X Bloodred
0.1 = Tessera - from Tessera X Classic Striped
Thats all I know about my two Tessera.

I breed them together and now are 14 Baby`s still there.
So far - so good!
Theoretically should the Baby`s be 75% Tessera and 25% Classics
I get 100% Tessera...

4 X Striped Tessera het.
7 X Tessera het.
1 X Tessera Rough Striped het.
1 X may be Tessera Motley het.
1 X may be Tessera Bloodred het. "


I don't know Don's full results from his Tessera X Tessera breeding BUT KJ & mine's breeding of Tessera X Tessera was the 75% litter= Tesseras 25% litter= normals/classics.

Obviously Will's Tessera het Bloodred was het motley/stripe without his knowledge--- normally Stripe & motley clears a corns belly of any pigment... with Tessera we sometimes see some checkers (well until now...now we know there can be black bellies).... This clutch has me baffled.... def. somthing VERY NEAT going on with the Tessera gene!!!!!!!!!
 
I say simplify it. Take Tessera with NO hets, breed it to a Normal. Then breed the babies back to it. Start the project all over again and record the results.

I just don't understand these cool blackbellies- there is SOMETHING different going on. IF it was JUST a weird Dorsal pattern OR JUST a weird balck belly we could write it off as just being an extreme/abbarent expression of Tessera.... What is really getting me is that BOTH blackbellies have almost identical odd dorsal patterns.

I'm glad there's a bunch of us working with them these days. As we breed more and more Tesseras we should get a better picture of whats going on.

Well, I'm pretty sure that that 'tessera motley' listed on the second page is no such thing, so you didn't get 100% tessera from the clutch. The motley looks like a very normal motley without any tessera influence.
 
Another Tessera has surprised us after skinning with a Brown Belly, which was not previously recognized as such!

Now we have from the clutch of 14 Babys two with Brown and get one with Black Belly.

Why would you speak in such absolutes when so little is still known about the trait? Maybe I have just missed it, but I have not seen a "normal" motley type with the lateral look of the one Will held back and the one on Don's page. Are they in fact Motley Tessera? Heck, I don't know, but I also don't know that they aren't at this point either. All that has to be done is to know breed the "motley tessera" back to a classic with no motley or stripe traits and see what happens.

That said, the math indicates it IS a motley Tessera. He had 14 eggs, he produced 6 stripe/motley types. The simple recessive trait inheritence would be approximately half the clutch would be motley/stripe types Obviously his tessera is het stripe and one of them is het motley also. That makes sense due to the fact the original lines KJ, Graham and Don started with were het stripe, so Will got lucky by his inheriting the stripe gene also. If his identifiactions are correct and the "maybe tesseras" are just normals, then he produced a tad over 75% tesseras which falls in line with Graham and KJ's results.

Either way, at this point, too much is unknown and we are all just guessing on certain things. Like Graham suggests, give it another 1-3 years and a whole lot more will be realized. Personally, I am interested to see if the mode of stipe and motley inheritence is affected on the snakes that are "normal" by-products of the tessera breedings.

I agree 100%. This gene has a lot of potential when it's combined with others. It's going to take some time, testing and a large results pool to start labeling things.
