Mites, or perhaps mites! (What substrate are you using? Could be dust)

I have some Rough Green Snakes that eat crickets. Cricket poop in a water bowl looks just like mites.

What kind if substrate do you use?

When I used Repti-Bark there was always black dots in the water. Dust comes of it.

Get a magnifying glass so you get a better look at them. I have a little jeweler's loupe I like to use to inspect any specks I find in water bowls.

I use Orchard wood chippings and it does produce dust. When the chippings fall in the water and are left they do go black so maybe the dust is going in and going black.

The black dots dont move about and i gave fudge a bath in a storage container last night to see if anything falls off. Nothing found so could just be dust.

I never thought of the dust.

I use my digital camera to check for mites.. gotta love to zoooooooooooooooooooom.

I also used my camera to check and make sure I got all of the tick I pulled off my dog last month.

I used an orchard bark substrate last week, Noticed specks in the water when i used it aswell. Also found small flys crawling around in the bag when i first opened it up. I've gone back to repti-bark now and the specks have disappeared.

I am wondering aswell because i buy it in bulk sacks, maybe this raises the chances of getting more dust and bugs in it rather than the smaller packs.
