Bowel Obstruction

Just a thought, are you giving her Nutribac? Or grapefruit seed extract in her water? A fairly low-cost supportive measure that may make a difference. I know you can order Nutribac online, but GSE is easy to find in most healthfood shops.

I wonder what contrast x-rays would show. If she's pooping, she doesn't have a bowel obstruction...(gastrointestinal contrast x-rays are my job)

I would bet that a two-dose regimen of Flagyl (Metronidazole) of 50 mg/kg would work absolute wonders here with the inflamation/infection that is causing the internal intestinal swelling.

I regret to inform everyone that Shesha had to be euthanized today. I did everything I could, but once the vet bills accumulated to over $900 with little improvement in her condition, I had to give up. I kept her for a month or so after the last treatment (another procedure to remove some of the fluid buildup) and watched her closely for signs of bloating and discomfort. She seemed content until earlier this week when she refused to eat (I was feeding her fuzzies to deal with her weight problems, btw) and seemed more restless than usual. This morning she hissed and struck at me, with a posture that said "defensive" rather than "hungry." She's never been aggressive before, so I took it as a sign that she was in pain and brought her to the vet to end her suffering.

Just to give some more information: I did end up having the fluid samples sent in for analysis, but results were inconclusive. They tried various treatments in the hopes that we'd get lucky (I didn't keep track of it all), but in the end, I couldn't afford more diagnostics and the easy cures weren't working, so it was likely something more sinister.

Raiyne, I am so so sorry. I am sure Shesha is very happy and pain-free over the bridge. Thank you for doing everything you could for her! I am sure she appreciated every bit of it. <3

Raiyne, I'm also sorry to hear this. Thank you for caring for her - she's carried a lot of love with her across that rainbow bridge.

I'm so sorry to hear she didn't make it. It's so hard to believe with all that money, the vet still couldn't do anything. I wonder if it is as frustrating for them as it is for you. I agree- God bless you for giving her every chance at diagnosis and recovery.

I appreciate all the support. I was pretty torn up about it yesterday, but have been handling it better today. Unfortunately, many family and friends don't understand grieving over a snake, saying, "It's JUST a snake...", etc. But she was with me a long time and even though snakes don't necessarily bond with their owners like other animals do, I still loved her very much and will miss her terribly.

I considered getting another corn, but now I'm not so sure. I think I'll wait a bit and see. Maybe I can use the tank for another reptile, like a turtle or lizard, or if it holds water in the same way an aquarium does (I'm not sure if it was meant for that), maybe I'll get some fish or something. ...but now I'm just rambling.

Again, I want to thank everyone for the kind words and all the advice during her illness. I wish you all the best.
