Box Turtle Enclosure: Progression Thread

It's very "vigorous!!" I like how it covers up the edges of everything, and how it makes it so I don't have to weed whack the sides of the pens. This is my first year with it- I'll see what happens in the fall and winter. If it goes super-kudzu on me, I'll rip it out.

It'll go Super Macho OMGWTH Kudzu on you. The people at the plant nursery warned us it was an aggressive plant, but we had no idea just how aggressive!

I went out today to pull some yellow lilypads, and found this little guy. I don't know if he'll transform into a frog this year or have to wait till spring. I'd been noticing some splashing around in the evenings when I went out, but this is the first time I actually tracked him down.

I haven't been home at the right time to catch the torts out, and of course, then I started to worry, so I spy-cammed them. (I can't see them by using a flashlight; I have to stick the camera in as far as I can reach and take a picture). I think this is Koko:

And I think this is Buttercup. I will have to consolidate them before winter because I only have emergency heating for one burrow, and they are just easier to keep track of if only one burrow is in use. I think they went down sometime in November last year.

I went out today to check on Fagalo. She was sitting happily on her hibernaculum.

I sat down on the edge of the strawberry garden to see if I could see any killifish. Saw this inches away from my foot! Now last night, I had gone out while it was nearly dark, just for no reason. I sat down to eat dinner and watch TV a few minutes later, and found one sitting on the foot rest of my chair! It must have rode in on my pajamas.

Ths pond looks pretty gloomy. Tina is the only waterlily still trying to bloom. The cover plants and the underwater aeration plants love the cooler weather, though. The sarassas are all fat and healthy, even though they get very limited feeding now. The pond temp was 70F yesterday afternoon. I will cut off food completely when it drops to 55F. Right now they are getting low protein cool weather food. When I do underwater pruning, they all crowd around my hands. You can barely see Borelli in this picture. (He's the mostly white fish).

I just read through this entire thread. It took me over an hour. I think I remember you posting pictures of when you were putting Fort Tort together. This is so amazing though. I'm definitely going to move somewhere where there's wildlife like this. We have next to none where I live.

Anyways...this is just way too cool. You're a very dedicated woman.

It took me months to build a 3'x10' ornamental pond for my water turtles, you could have build the pyramids in that time!

I haven't seen this thread. But I have to say Nanci, I am so envious of this all. It's a wonderful backyard you have there.

Oh my gosh, I want THAT in my backyard. The whole setup is just amazing. I'm going to show it to my boyfriend and tell him to get cracking this summer

It was a nice evening out at the water garden tonight.

I had a secret visitor under my rocking chair. He stayed there the whole time I was out!

The new wisteria I planted last summer is blooming. If only I could get a snake to pose with it!

My beloved Forest Pansey Redbut is doing well, so far. It hates sunshine, and will not look so nice later in the summer.

I chased McCoy all over the place to get a good pic of him. He's one of my favorites.
