Box Turtle Enclosure: Progression Thread

I just worry about birds picking off from your pond. Especially with goldfish that get large and colorful. We've got a 600gal pond with a net, and a heron still got in.

They say steep sides prevent herons from getting in- they like to walk down edges. And there will be nearly solid cover from water lillies.

That's it for the day! I got the walls up and nailed. I nailed every 12" and even in the overlapping corners, since the water will be so heavy. I like the size- it's plenty big for a water garden. Tomorrow I have to work at my job, but really I'm stuck waiting for the underlayment, anyway, which should arrive Wednesday. I can trim off the ends of the 4x4's. The cap will hold down the liner, so that won't go on till the end.

I found the first two plants for it, too- black elephant ears, or taro. They can live in water. I will replant them into pond pots, with underwater soil, and put a layer of gravel on top to keep the soil down and keep fish from digging. They will sit on concrete blocks to bring them up to the height I want them at. They will go in the two back corners- I expect them to get big.

Also just keep in mind that goldfish love to destroy plants.
So just make sure any plants you put in are potted like you're already planning to do, or have baskets around the roots if they're free floating.

Also, water lettuce reproduces like the plague, you might or might not like that.

Sweet... I'm gone for a couple of months and you go on a rampage! lol... It's all looking so very awsome and makes me wish we had land of our own to play with like that.

Can't wait to see what the next pond looks like when it is finished. =)

Jen, where have you been????? I had a little snake rampage, too, with my tax refund.

Other Jenn- I wish I could find one water lettuce! My hunt didn't go too well. And you can't just go buy it, in Florida- it's prohibited. Like feeder roaches.

It doesn't look like the underlayment has even shipped yet, dang holiday weekend. So no water until Friday, probably. I sure am coming up with ideas, though, for planting around it. I wish I knew how to build decks.

I know! I love it. The grass is coming back and filling in. All the plants are doing great. Probably thanks to drip irrigation! I am going to go hunt for more water plants sometime this week.

The new pond will be for waterlillies and some small fish- either goldfish or pygmy sunfish.

Hmm sounds nice, I like the idea of Pygmy Sunfish and maybe some other local fish. Maybe some least killies along a few more newts ruling the pond. :D

Why You Don't Want Me For Your Landscape Contractor

I accidentally bought two pond liners, so I had to build the new water garden. In buying the lumber, I planned to cut 10 foot boards in half. But then I accidentally bought four boards for the cap, not two. So I decided to build some little fakey deck thing to set potted plants on. Then I thought, why not just try building a small, simple real deck??? Actually, this wa a relatively cheap add-on- I think I have $100 into it.

Water garden Day Three.

First, the piers:

Next the frame, which was WAY harder than it should have been. I finally had to pre-drill the screw holes. It's hard to build stuff outside on the grass.

Finally, the decking. I don't have it screwed down yet- it's too hot. I wouldn't have gotten this far except it's been mostly overcast.

I'm thinking some sort of not-too-tall sort of see-through privacy fence for the wall opposite the deck, and the left wall, toward the house, along the water garden and the deck. That will make it seem more like a room. And a glider on the deck! And cool plants to cover up the piers.

Or I have to much energy! I think I figured out a way to build an arbor large enough to cover the whole deck, that wouldn't be too hard! Shade! Just put it together with four ready-made trellises and a couple 2 x 4's!

Oooh! I saw my first anole out at Terra Pen tonight! And a cardinal pair!

Cardinals are very pretty. We see them around here a lot. My parents really want to have a pair of bluebirds so they bought a "blue bird house". The finches are the only ones that we see making nests though. :spinner:

:)Holly crap Nanci!!!!:) Where do find the time?as I was going through the past bunch of photos i've missed, i thought i'd better not let the wife see this or my honey do list will double, maybe triple!!!lol GOOD for you!!!:)
