Breeding book

So I may be getting into breeding sooner then I thought. My hypo male is a little over 200gs and from what I have read that is fine to breed as long as the female is in the proper size range. I am getting a new rack in December (for adults) and already have a hatchling rack so if I find a breedable female I may try for an 08 litter. I want to make sure I do all my research in advance and so I am curious if there is any book you would recommend for breeding.

Why don't you raise a hatchling female? Will cost you 3 years but you have much more choice then the few 'breeding size' available. I don't know how the 'Market' is in San Diego but here in Holland after over 5 months i *still* haven't sold all my hatchlings. But there all normals i think they sell better where there a 'special' color.
Anyway it cost me a great deal of money and time. If you don't do it for the love of it you won't get anything out of it. So i would recomment buying the snake you want. Not to breed asap.

As for reading i would recommend the Corn snake manual. All you need to know is in there.

No I will talk to a number of the local pet shops before I start breeding about the possibility of selling the snakes to them at a super discounted price. (I have one in mind in particular that keeps their snakes in decent conditions.

Don't breed. Your snake will have miserable lives.

Pet stores only care for money because a petstore is a business. And if they don't make enough profit they go out of business. So they will invest as little as possible in the snake's welfare and sell them to the first 'Mommy mommy i want the red snake!'. If you think they have animal welfare on their mind, they wouldn't have opened a petstore to begin with.

Advice: don't breed. No good will come of it. Just enjoy the snake you have.

Ugh, it appears Double Het is at it again.

Sanebedlam, don't allow yourself to be discouraged by this specimen. Just check out all the shops in your area, you can tell who takes good care of their reptiles and who doesnt. Yes, be choosy who your babies go to and they won't live miserable lives!
It is a bit late to find a female ready to breed next year. I know Dean (Roy Munson) had a few, but I don't know if he has any left. He is very honest and a real pleasure to do business with so you may want to slip him a pm.
And for goodness sakes, don't be shy about coming here and asking for advice!

At some point I was thinking about opening a pet shop. Simply because of business, will I not care about my animals? It all depends on the owner of the store.

Hi There
Starsevol is right, Here in the province of KZN, South Africa we have quite a few shops that specialise mainly in reptiles, reptile food and reptile accesories.
I know who they are and how they treat their animals so when I sell my babies I know who to sell to and who I can trust. I don't have a problem selling my babies every year and I sell between 50 and 80 babies each year. I certainly don't sit 5 months with the babies ( except the keepers of course ).
I need to add that my Snakes are not intended as a source of income.
They are my pets and my hobby which just happens to bring in some money every year. So I am not phased by the quantity of babies I receive.

Ciao

Actually "your" identifies possession.
"You're" is a contraction of the words "you" and "are".

Anyone who doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're" is really too dumb to reason with. Among other things......

Oh, and coming back under a different id...great move genius. The last person who did that had her ip permabanned. Let's hope it happens again!

Mijn exuses. Mijn Nederlands is een stuk beter. Oh wacht, jij spreekt natuurlijk alleen maar je eigen taal. Je bent gewoon een walgelijk etterbakje.

It's really lame if you have nothing else to attack me then by spelling errors.

I really recommend Don Soderbergs new book - Cornsnakes in Captivity. I know it's not the big one that he is planning on getting out, but I really love the way he lays out breeding snakes almost as though it's a simple recipe. There is even a great time line you can closely follow if you choose!

I just wanted to say that Don Soderberg has a few females that will be ready to breed in the spring on his surplus list. They are very nice!
