Build a breeding rack

I just made a mouse rack today after I saw ZoologyGirl's video. It costed me about 50 dollars. I used bigger boxes, and I made it for 5 boxes but only bought 3 boxes. Yah, kinda confusing.

Looks Great!!! I built one in "08" for rat's. It didn't last long as the rat chewed holes in the pan.

I was just going to say much of the same! I built one last year for rats, and it did NOT last.. they chewed through it like it was NOTHING... Had a rat infestation in my garage that I could only get rid of after weeks of setting up traps and rat poison... not fun!

We moved to an entirely glass cage set up, with a drip system for water from 2.5 gallon water buckets - 1 2.5 gallon bucket handles 6 cages... we rigged a system with a piece of metal pipping that we cut to about 3-4 inches, running the water line into the screens on top of the cage, into the metal pipping, and then attached to a small mammal water nipple thingy... used metal fitting and a zip tie above the screen to keep it tautly in place so they can't pull it in. Been working great for the last 6 months, which has definitely eased my mind :)

First time here just logged in and all I can say is F A N T A S T I C,,, well done,, very well described,, well built and your sense of humour is second to none,, I LOVED THE VIDEO,, now,,, ??? can you make me one please as I am just looking into housing and breeding mice,, (Mmm, not personally breeding of course, I'll let the mice do that)

WELL DONE.. looks like a video I will be watching again to get all the details down,, :grabbit: :bowdown::D

Sooooo I finally got my own mouserack done :p and omg it was kinda funny. A few tips for anyone that wants to try this project.

I used four 2x2's and 8 1x2's, the lumber cost me about $25 at Home Depot. The rack is 7 feet tall and houses six bins. I thin I could have made it a little shorter if I left less space between the bins. I can still get to the top bin though, good thing I'm tall! I might redo this at some point and snug everything up so I can make it a little shorter.

First recomendation: those spiffy little corner clamps that heather has in the video, BUY SOME!! THis is SOOOO hard to get true, especially when using wood that is slightly off square or warped (My rack leans badly to the right, but that's okay we'll fix it later)

Another pair of hands is defenitely useful as well, when you put the first sholf on the four corner legs like to go every which way lol.

Also I origonally purchase 2 1/2 inch screws, this was a mistake, use 2 1/4 either 7's or 8's. I used 8's wish I had used something a little narrower. Also predrill! predrill! predrill!

My bins are dishpans I bought at the dollarama. 1.25 each, work pretty good.

Also I used 1/4" mesh, I think it's a little too small. I use lab blocks for my rodents and putting it on top of the wire I think the spaces are too small for them to get at the food.

Anyway, here it is! Took me and a friend two days to finish it. We did all the toppers one day and then put it all together the next.

PS So far it's cat proof... I think one of the cats was sitting on top of one of the shelves cause the water bottle was knocked off and a couple staples pulled loose from the wire but other than that mice are safe and snug and she didn't kock it over!

Great video and rack Heather!! I really enjoyed the video. I don't breed my own mice anymore, but if I did, I think I'd have to go with this system.

I've heard from several people that they're mice/rats have chewed through their plastic containers.... I keep my rats in tubs and the only problem I have is that the two stupid girls like to jump up and hang from the wire mesh screen on the lid. But no chewing and no escapees. :shrugs:

I haven't had any chewing in mine either...though I also have one or two who like to climb on the mesh lol. Monkey mice.
