Can snakes be fed a vegan diet?

then honestly what does it matter that you kill more animals? what is the point of having morals?

I don't require an external authority figure to make me act morally.

If there is no afterlife, then this life is the only one we've got. Might as well make it as pleasant as possible for as many creatures as I can while I'm here.

What!!! You mean without fear of retribution, without the thumb of some unseen essence hovering over you like a hammer about to strike a nail, needing no one but yourself to guide your actions and with actual thought to the consequences of those actions, you STILL choose to be as good a person as you think you can?

Welcome to Earth. What is the name of the planet you come from? What are the immigration policies and is there a waiting list?

Amazondoc- what's the longest refrigerator life possible for chicken eggs? (It's probably too late to save me, I'm just curious).

Dunno! Long time, though, several weeks. I have had NON-refrigerated eggs that were perfectly good for eating after something like 3 weeks or more. Eggs are tough!

If you want to test it, you can tell if the egg is starting to go bad because the white will get very watery and the yolk will no longer "stand up". IMHO eggs in the frig are more likely to dry out than to rot. But also keep in mind that eggs from the store have been washed, which removes the outer protective coating, AND they may already be relatively old when you buy them -- so they may not last as long as a "real" (fresh) egg.

I ask because I've had "vegetarian free-range-no drugs" eggs in the fridge since, as best I can remember, summer. I cracked one, good (I've had egg-laying chickens, so I know a good egg) cracked a second, bad!! threw those out, cracke, cooked and ate the third one. I miss my little banty chickens. I have foxes in the woods behind me here, though.

Do you honestly believe that you should only do "the right thing" if there's a risk you'll get caught and punished for doing "the wrong thing" ?

I have morals and ethics not because I'm scared that I'll go to some horrible afterlife... but because morals and ethics mean that I live THIS life the best I can, and inflict a minimum of pain, stress and fear on others.

Question for amazondoc...What do you do with the hens that become too old to lay eggs?

I was at one of the pet stores in my area buying crickets the other day. An older lady was wondering around with a small child in the same area where I was carrying around a lovely bag of crickets. She asked me what they were for, and I told her I was planning on covering them in chocolate as a treat for myself (of course that's the first smarta@# thing to come out of my mouth). Then I explained to her that my wife and I have a couple of bearded dragons and these were part of the diet of such an animal. She had the proper thought processes to ask me if I ever feel guilty putting live creatures in a position where I know they're just gonna be eaten, and die. I then politely explained to her that, in fact, I feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever. Of course I felt the need to further my explanation by politely telling this gentle old lady that in order for something to live there is some other living creature(s) that must die. All kinda of things die. All kinds of things thrive off of the death of others. It simply is the order of life on this orb we all strole around on. Even that grass Wade loves so much must thrive off the death of other organisms. Things die, and other things live, just to die, so something else can live, and then something else dies, etc ad naseum.

Lovely thread, I think.

Hens are very rarely actually "too old to lay eggs". Big egg businesses kill their hens at very young ages because they start laying **less** with age -- but they still lay.

I don't think that answered the question Susan asked.
