Cat help needed

This morning, in between reading whiny posts, I noticed our 2.5 year old male cat, Sterling, was acting weird. He kept going up to soft things, like dog beds, blankets and the ferret play tunnel and squatting and rubbing his back end on them. The first time, there was a small brown smear and I shooed him away. The 2nd time I shooed him, nothing, and the 3rd time, on a blanket, there was clear liquid mixed with some bright red blood.

I took him to the emergency vets. $200 later they said that his chest wound, which I thought was healing, may be reinfected (he's been in an Elizabethan collar for three weeks because of constant licking of scary tissue on his chest that led to a small, open sore) and that the infective process in his body had led to thickening of solution in his anal glands, hence the rubbing and blood from the raw anal area.

They gave us Baytril, to be given 2x daily for 14 days and Metacam, 1x daily for 5 days.

They shaved down his chest, told us to keep the e-collar and put neosporin on the wound 2x per day.

Within two hours of arriving home, he was engaging in the same behavior. He has rubbed anal seepage all over several pillows and the rug. We now have him crated with water, a big litter box and wet food. He has been in the litter box for ten minutes in the "squat" position and nothing is happening.

Should I wait for the antibiotics to kick in? He just had his first dose tonight. Has anyone else ever had this happen? The vet checked all vitals-- temp and all else normal. He felt his tummy and examined him and found "nothing else wrong" or so I was told.

I am worried....

Worms and the need for anal gland expression come to mind, but for now I would let the antibiotics kick in and let him do his thing. In 3 days if it continues have a fecal done and anal glands checked. Sorry poor kitty:(

Has he pooped?? Antibiotics and medication can make for a backed up animal. For my dad's little 19 lb shih tsu, we give Metamucil wafers. For her size, we break off a corner and feed it once a day.

Anal expression occurs to me as well, but I've never done that successfully on my own. I'm always afraid of the pain factor. Poor baby... keep us posted!

If you have a big dog crate or a spare bathroom I would confine him for now.

Oatmeal does wonders for all sorts of poop problems, if you can get him to eat it. :)

as far as licking the chest wound, you can rub bitter apple spray AROUND the wound with your finger and that should, but not always, deter him. I som'times think the E collar is more stressful on the animal than it is worth, especially with a cat. :)

hope that helps.

So sorry to hear about your kitty! I cant really offer any advice, although the advice already posted sounds pretty good to me. But I do offer my thoughts and hopes for quick recovery!

I am the anal gland expressing Queen...my lab henry until he was three needed his expressed every third month- smelly stuff but it makes for a happier pet:)

I agree with Lori. I was expecting you to say, after the dx, that that was the first thing the vet did....and maybe let you watch so you'd know how.

Now I will say, I've never done it to a cat...but I would, especially to relieve his itching/fullness/discomfort. And to save the furniture, etc.
I've emptied many a dog's anal scent glands....and I'm not scurred a bit.

See, there's Danielle....I knew she'd be here to the rescue---with the direct approach. :D

Get Tara to gently but firmly hold the front half (of the cat) and hold the tail up like a handle, and just be sure your face is out of the way. Maybe catch the spray/squirted stuff in a cloth. He will feel better in the long run.

I am so shame.
I'm taking myself back to one of those bazillion-page-long political labyrinthine thread vortex thingies......

I think that movie was not supposed to be as funny as I found it...that guy took himself so SERIOUSLY while saying "anal gland" over and over...

Sorry for the hijack...give kitty pets for me! Hope he's better soon!

You guys are crazy.
Sterling is back from another emergency run to the vet (who thankfully did NOT charge us for the second trip). He does not have a UTI thank god (can be deadly in male cats) nor a blockage in the uritha...but his poor little blatter was inflamed so he thought he had to pee even if he did not have anything left inside. He has yet another medication to take...but should be feeling better soon.
Thanks everyone for your concern and help...and laughs.

I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. Thank god it's not a UTI, that would just be horrible. It sounds to me that you are doing everything you need to do. The only thing I would suggest is stay calm and positive around him, all animals can pick up on that type of vibe. You don't want to stress him out any more than he already is. Did the vet say what any of the side effects for the meds he'll be on are? The inflamed bladder may be a side effect of the meds.

I'm glad he went back, my first thought was "male cat + squatting in litterbox + no urine = BLOCKAGE!" So I'm really happy to hear that that's not the case. I hope he's feeling better soon. Poor guy.
