Ok I am so confused. I do not have a probe kit and the vet wants like $45 vet visit fee to probe for me. My lil "Rose" is just over 18 inches now which I understand to be too big to "pop" anymore. I was re-reading Kathy's book again and my hubby was holding "her". He looks over my shoulder and asks what the pic On I think page 37 is (its tails male-female-male-female) and I told him. He goes, "Um, honey, Rose is a girl right?" I'm like yeah why and he says, "Her tail looks a LOT like that first one all fat then suddenly thin and getting thinner to the tip. Doesn't the caption say that is a male?"

So now I look and wouldn't you know it, "her" tail DOES look like that!

How reliable is the visual sexing technique?

No biggie if she is a he, just means I want a girl next instead of a boy.

I'll try to see if I can get a photo, not sure library computers will let me.

If he is a she any ideas for a new name? We are at a loss!
 
Looking at the tail is not a for sure way to tell sex. Probing is the best answer. You might call around and see if there is a pet shop in your area that specializes in snakes. They my probe it for you. Or look of a herp society in your area. A set of probes costs as much as a vet visit so that may not be practical for a one shot deal either.

As for changing genders you would have to ask .......no I'm not going to say that.
 
Possible she is a he. But looking at the tail can be tricky. I would leave the tail guess to an expert. Probing by an expert will be your best bet, however even they can give you a bad sexing if not done correctly. Hopefully you'll find out and it won't cost an arm and a leg...
 
As previously stated, tail size sexing is extremely unreliable. And I wouldn't buy a probe kit unless you have someone there to teach you how to properly use it. You could very easily injure your snake.

It's easily done with makeup and, depending on the gender to be switched to, either duct tape and ice cubes, or a sock. Although this is only a very temporary technique. :laugh:
 
Oh that is so funny! I thnk there is a herp um show?? in October in Independance, MO. I'll look into hat and try to find out if I can bring my snake for someone to look at. I had "her" "popped at 12 inches, 14 inches and 16 inches and all showed female should I go with that and just have a laugh at this?
