Christmas Photo Contest?

Christmas Photo Contest?

  • Total voters
    55
  • Poll closed .
2- i HATE pinned topics that don't have useful information. Even at my 1280x720 resolution I have a long ways to scroll to get past these polls just to get to the more resent information/posts... perhaps a different, temporary forum for poll voting might be in order. Better to have a SINGLE post directing traffic than 40....

Going on this idea, would someone be willing to talk to Rich and see if he'd be willing to make a "Contest" sub-forum that people can check out for updates, past contests, and future contests?

The Nothing said:
1- I didn't know there was a Halloween contest. This forum is HUGE and my attention span small. I dunno where the original post was, but i saw NO post about the halloween contest...

If you use the "New Posts" function (button next to search), you would have found it when we were yapping about it in the original thread. It ended up being a pretty long thread! :D

It looks like you aren't interested in participating anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter if you found the threads. ;)

I'm game for a photo contest forum if Rich is up to it. It keeps everything organized, nice & neat. I'll shoot him over a PM about it!

That is an amazing idea! I nominate TME, since she's been doing so awesome organizing things already. ^_^

I love the whole contest thing. The only issue I can see with doing so many (and even having a sub-forum) is that people may stop donating prizes because the contest thing will become so average around here. I think we had SO MANY donations for the last one because it hadn't been done in awhile.

I could be wrong though (it wouldn't be the first time )

Yeah, I agree. Probably having one every month isn't a good idea...Plus it won't give enough time for some to get entries in. Every other month sounded good to me...What does everyone think of that?

Does everyone like the 3 category options? Or would you prefer one Cornsnake category?

In my personal opinion, if we have enough prizes to do 4 categories, I think an "Other Reptiles: Photoshop" category should be added. This gives those with other reptiles a chance to show off their creativity with something other than corns. Now please note, I did say IF there are enough prizes to do 4 categories. If not, I think the original 3 categories are fine!

Now, on a side note. The "Photoshop" category stated in the rules that there must be at least 2 pictures in the entry. Could we maybe expand this to just editing one picture? I had one entry that I really wanted to put in the photoshop segment, but because it was just one picture with a focal greyscale, I couldn't. I think if we change the rule to add color editing to the photoshop section as well, we might get a lot more entries (especially from those of us who don't know how to combine pictures!)

Before I knew it I ran out of time to submit to the halloween contest v_v 5 weeks would be so much better.
I'm interested, and I already have an idea!

I would agree with adding a Other Digital "Photoshop" category if we got enough entries in the other 3 categories. Right now, being that we had a total of 4 entries in the Other category, it doesn't seem worth it to add that at this time. But I'll for sure file that away for the future! :)

The reason why that was done is because playing with Filters and Color Adjustments isn't true "Photoshoping." That is such a brain dead thing to do, their really isn't any creativity involved. I would rather nix the Photoshop category completely then allow it to be nothing but Filters and Color Adjustments. Their are plenty of tutorials that teach how to combine pictures if someone was really interested in learning. Their is nothing saying that you can't use Filters and Color Adjustments in entries, but you need to include at least two photos in the final image.

Another thing on the Photoshop combining images thing...You could do something as simple as pulling an Andy Warhol (one of my personal favorite pop artists), as long as it fits into the theme.

Now THAT I might be able to do!

BTW, I love the selection you chose. We had that print hanging in my old restaurant.

Personally, I prefer the contests to be anonymous. I think it makes a more level playing field for everyone involved. Vote for the photo - not the person. I know people can still tell their friends and such which is their photo, but in general, I still believe in the long run it is more honest if it is anonymous.
I agree with this...it seems to be only fair....This is how I'd would like to see it happen..And I also think that the way the halloween contest was fine..if you don't enter..then don't complain about not having enought to shoose from..work with what you have..IMO an X-Mas photo contest will be fun...as long as the photo entries wre anonymous...just my Opinion..;)

i think that the photo comps are great BUT i think that even once every 2 months is too often, i think it should be something like one for halloween, one for christmas, one for easter and one sometime in the summer.

just my humble opinion.

I would LOVE to participate! I feel really left out because I was so psyched about entering the Halloween one, but then got too busy to put anything together. A Christmas one would be fantastic!! *starts planning*

That's what happened with me... I'd be excited about a Christmas one. I've got a lot more stuff to use for that one than I did for the Halloween one.

I agree with the contests being done for particular holidays or seasons so that people get some time to work on their ideas. Too many contests gets overwhelming and boring. There needs to be a better way of advertising it, so maybe a forum or subforum would work out. The Hallowe'en contest turn out was dismal, but the entries that were received were great.

There don't always need to be prizes, either. I don't necessarily want to win anything other than bragging rights. Here's a radical idea, that I'm sure Rich will shoot down (with reason, lol), why not use the winning pic as the logo for Cornsnakes.com on the website for a week or so? I'd be tickled pink to see my pic every time I logged in, with Cornsnakes.com on it. No shipping, no age restriction, no international prize problems. It would mean work for Rich, unless the mods have that kind of power. Just an idea.

Swapping out the header image (if you continually swap out a "logo" it technically isn't a logo anymore as the point of a logo is brand recognition) is something more then likely the mods won't have access to as that's an vBulletin Admin thing as opposed to a Moderation thing.

I haven't received a response from Rich about a separate forum yet, but I imagine it wouldn't be something he'd consider unless their was some real interest in the contests (IE, they were successful), as he is the one who would have to setup the forum (and dismantle it and move the threads if it is unsuccessful). So I did ask him...Just waiting for him to have a chance to get back to me. :)

A. UGH, why does something that's supposed to be fun turn into such a debate/hassle. I don't think anyone should complain about how any contest is run unless they step up to the plate and help organize and run it. It's quite a commitment of time and is often done for the love of the activity. But that's just my opinion. ;) It's kind of a kick in the butt when you run something and then """everyone""" complains about it.

B. As the """founder""" of the Week In Review forum, I don't see how it could be viewed as inappropriate to run a contest or three through that forum, so I would gladly offer up that space to sticky the polls for future contests. I would gladly help from that standpoint right now and may be able to offer up prizes at some point. (I know I have an '08 Bloodred pair that's just sitting around collecting dust right now.)

C. I offer that we have the following contests through the course of the next 12 months:
Holiday
Winter/Valentines
Spring/Easter
Summer/4th of July
Halloween/Thanksgiving/Fall
That's five total contests in a 12 month period.

D. I think there is the tendency to have too many categories and too many winners. What's the point of a contest if """everyone""" wins?! Top three from three categories when there's only a few entries . . . is, well, ridiculous in my opinion. Until participation picks up, I think it should be limited to 2 categories and ideas for those can be left up to whoever.

E. I've brought up before about having a contest for a new CS.com logo, but it wasn't met with much excitement, so I doubt (I'd love to be wrong) that Rich would go for a logo swap idea.

F. (PS)No offense, and not trying to be rude, but if the people overseas want to have a separate contest for themselves, someone should run one for them. They do have their own UK forum where it could be posted and advertised or we could also use the WIR forum. Prizes could come from them as well to avoid shipping issues etc. Just easier and more convenient is all.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
