Colonel Slithers Jun '08 Abbott's Okeetee - Progression Thread!

Good news Jen! I'm glad we know why he skipped a meal. He should be ravenous by the time he's done shedding. Can't wait to see post shed pics too.

Yeah, I've offered meals twice now but I give up until after he's done shedding.

His belly checks turned back to black today, his eyes are wicked opaque, I'm thinking it should be any time now...?

Anyone have a rough estimate of how long it should take from clear to shed? I know it can be different from snake to snake & w/ different conditions etc. He is chilling out in his clay pot hide that I made him, stuffed full of sphagnum moss.

I think I want to make him a tree trunk type hide with nice dark spots, opening up to climbing branches at the top that I can overlap with vines. I've got a vision...now I just need the sculpey!

Horray!! Three weeks after he refused eating, the Colonel finally shed & ate tonight! I woke up this morning and saw a skin intertwined throughout his vines. Looks like an arboreal shed (is that even a term? if not i'm coining it now).

Shed = PICTURES!!!

Sorry for the real crummy-ness of this photo shoot. It is raining and cold outside, no natural light today. I tried to take a few w/o flash, but he was slithering all over the place and it was hard for me to take pics at all until he was OM NOMMING his mouse!

I think the yellows on his neck are coming in a bit brighter, and the orange is a bit more vivid.

Anyway, enjoy!!

:dancer:HE ATE HIS FIRST HOPPER!!! That's awesome. His colors are blowing my mind. I need my shades he's so bright. I see you're holding out on us though. I can see some great framed photos back there. LOL!

First full-on viv cleaning, woo!! It was a lot of work manhandling that tank around in the bath tub. Ugh.

I did a little progression on setting it back up, lol.

He is in the log now looking at me like WTF?! I'm not sure he's comfortable with the redecorating yet.

I swapped hide positions. Since the cave is darker he goes in there more, so I put it on the warm end. The upside down flower pot, however, is his absolute favorite (& cheapest) hide. I need to make the hole on the top bigger because he had to back out last week after I fed him.

I also swapped out aspen for sani chips. I happened to have a bag because I bought both when I first got him (Lee uses sani chips). I'll see which one I like better. I think I am leaning towards the aspen now but we'll see.

I had to re-enforce his bio-vine (the brown vine in there) by doubling it over & twisting it together. I think he's too heavy for a single layer now, it sinks down towards the ground and sometimes the suction cups pop off his plant and he falls off.

I got water in my thermometer too. Amateur mistake, but I needed to clean icky stuff off of it. I tried to dry it out with the hairdryer. The display just came back but unfortunately they're all 8s. I am going to give it a bit of time to see if it doesn't come back to life yet...

I just managed to snap a rare out-n-about pic when I walked into the office & turned the light on. He made a beeline for his cave hide.

He's a stunner! Those colors really pop!

I think I like the sanichips...I've never heard of it. Where did you get it?

Very nice Okeetee! You also have a very well thought out terrarium with great hides... I'm sure that the Colonel has no complaints about his acomodations. :D

What's the light gray object affixed to the right of the terrarium?

Dan :)

That would be a dual zone thermometer / hygrometer. I put it off to the side so it didn't stick out like a sore thumb in the front of the viv where I had it pre-cleaning.

Lucky for me I came home today to find it working again! The water I got in it evaporated and it is fully functional!

Thanks! How long now til you get yours?

You should see what he's doing now...it's funny. He's giving me the stare down from inside his cave as if to say "don't you want to go to bed & shut the lights off in the office so I can go cruise around undisturbed??"

He just won't come out while I'm sitting here. Maybe some day...:boring:

Oooh I've got something else to update on:

He has not made a move to strike at me since I first got him. I can even touch his head now and he doesn't care. He is a very laid back, shy guy. He won't come out of the hides until I leave & shut the lights off. He's a very good eater, but gingerly takes the prey from me & crawls off to swallow it. He knows it is not alive and doesn't see why he should bother constricting it. He seems to wolf down whatever I give him now.
