Confused about hypos

carnivorouszoo

Crazy Critter Lady
I've recently been told the two I am sure are hypos are normals but that just makes me confused. The two I hatched do seem to have a bit more pigment in their borders than many other hypos I have seen but their belly checks are BROWN not black and they just shed. IF they were normals wouldn't there be color in their shed where the saddles are? Because their sheds are clear as my amel's sheds. . . any insight would be greatly appreciated and yes I will try to get some good pics of their backs and bellies.

Ok here are the photos. One shows a shed from a "hypo" I can in no way discern the saddle areas on this shed and a shed from a "normal" and on its shed I can make out where saddles were. Then a photo of the "hypo" and a photo of the "normal" then a photo of the two together. Am I right in my IDs on them?

they do look normal to me. The normals I hatched before looked the same as yours. My hypo's were red in the saddles and the belly checkers were alse light brown-reddish.

If seen hundreds of hypos and they vary quite a bit. My bet is that those are hypos since the normals from the clutch are so dark for comparison. If you see NO pattern on the shed and the belly scales are light brown to gray then it's a hypo.
Just my 2 cents.

Yes there is no clolor on the sheds from the two "hypos" but both normals have pigment in their sheds. The normals have stark black belly checks and the "hypos" have faded brown belly checks. The normals are deep mahogany in the saddle color and the "hypos" are a brilliant red in the saddles. I also noted the "hypos" background color is far brighter, almost a sherbert orange (where the orange is showing) and the normals orange spots are more of a deep marigold orange. The two "hypos" are almost identical and the two normals look almost identical. Last year I had a clutch of all normals het amel mot or stripe and they looked just like the normals in this clutch. Same male fathered that clutch with a different female. I just want to be sure I am labeling correctly. Thanks!

I have to appologize... i didn't looked too good at the pics, as I didn't noticed that there were 2 different snakes on them. I do think the lighter ones are hypo. Again, sorry :)

No problem, I do plan on keeping the hypos and the two I think are ghosts (have to fix my siggy as post shed one "ghost" darkened quite a bit lol) and breeding then in the future. Well, maybe breeding them, who knows how I will feel about breeding in 3-4 years lol.

Hypos can vary quite a bit. As a result, they can and will confuse you no end! I was so accustomed to hatching out one kind of hypo that when an entire clutch from a ghost motley X amber breeding hatched out all looking like normals, I swore that the amber wasn't an amber at all but something totally different, such as a golddust (couldn't see Rich Z making that sort of mistake, even though he says that "hypo" is a 4-letter word). Unfortunately, I only had one hatchling of those I kept actually survive beyond a couple of months, and I then lost her at about 1 1/2 years of age. I can definitely say that she changed enough that she did look like a hypo. I'll bet your two will also change even more dramatically over the next couple of months and there will be no doubt they are hypos. The belly checks are a big indication, IMO.

Thanks Susan! It was especially confusing since I was only expecting normals het snow lol. Had no clue hypo was even involved. Since I am keeping them I feel safe calling themhypos until I prove out otherwise thought the person who had said they are normal clarrified saying they look normal het hypo and that the darker two are normal not het hypo??

I lean to saying, that what you believe are Hypos, are Hypos.
(Of course, test breeding them would confirm one way or the other)

One more thing ...

One shows a shed from a "hypo" I can in no way discern the saddle areas on this shed and a shed from a "normal" and on its shed I can make out where saddles were.

Although there is a difference, between a Normal shed and a Hypo shed, Hypo sheds do have some pigmentation to them ... it is just not very obvious.;)

Shouldn't normal het hypo and normal not het hypo be identical?

Agreed. I don't know who you talked to, but there are no known het markers for hypo A that I know of. In fact, to date, I personally wouldn't believe ANY of supposed het markers to be 100% accurate. Do I believe that some examples of certain hets show through in the phenotype? You bet! But I also know that known hets do not have to show the het markers as I have produced examples of all of them. New het markers for some morphs are being discussed, but breeding trials and more in depth observations still need to be performed to back the discussion up. The only thing someone should use het markers for is to help choose a particular snake over another where both are equal in all other respects, have the same possible het percentage and one shows het markers and the other doesn't.

I won't name names on who I have talked to, they are self-admitted a newbie beyond belief and it was just their thoughts. She was fine with me bringing what she thought here to check. I'll take the info back to her regarding het markers so she can learn from it. Thanks everyone! Oh I gotta say, I got an email from someone who had seen the sheds and said, "Oh no the one who shed clear is an ultramel." Um, no way lol. No way I got ultramel from a CL snake and a Petco snake lol. Besides the hypos do not look like ultramels to me at all.
