Hello everyone! Im new to the forum. I need some help and no matter who i ask or where i look up info i cant get a good straight answer! My question is what wattage day AND night bulb should i use for my corn? I would like a night light i could see her very well in yet not disturbing her night cycle.:blowhead:I have a UTH but shes rarely on the ground,(she acts like a tree boa  ) so i want to give her another source of heat. Shes in a 20 gal now and when she is a yearling im putting her in a 55 Gal viv. So id lile to know the wattages for a 20 gal AND a 55gal :blowhead:
Thank u all!!! :bird:

What are yout temps, and how do you have your UTH hooked up? Before anyone can give you an idea of how to go about setting up the cage we need a little background info. With a UTH correctly hooked up and an accurate temp reading on both warm and cool sides an additional day and nite bulbs to assist in heating is overkill; very low wattage bulbs for viewing would be my recommendation after getting your setup squared away :)

You probably can't get a good answer... because it's much better to use a UTH for your corn snake. They're crepescular and so make the most use out of belly heat, not basking. If she's not using the ground much, your temperatures may be off.

How are you controlling the temperature of the UTH? What sort of substrate do you have? How are you measuring the temps, and what are they?

I have a thermostat for the UTH, and its 85 on the hot side and 70on the cold. At night its 75on the hot side and 70 on the cold. I have put her physically innthe hide on the hot side yet she always comes out, even if i increase or decrease the temp, she just loves to stay in the plants.

Well, corns don't need a night drop in their temps, so no need to drop it to 75 at night.
I don't use day and night bulbs in my cages, all my snakes just get ambient lighting and the lights are shut off at night. If you could find fluorescent day and night bulbs that will be best, because they don't put off any heat, then the wattage will not matter and you could get the long strip lights to illuminate the entire cage. The only heat source you need is the UTH.

How are you measuring the temps? Stick on thermometers or digital probe? Where is the thermometer located?

I agree. Use an under the tank heater with a thermostat. Then measure your temps on both the hot and cool side. Your snake(s) can do the rest. Adding heat lights is a waste of time and money and will most likely make things to hot and stress out your snake(s). Corn's are nocturnal. They get their heat from the heat left on the ground from the day.

As long as the temps are correct I wouldn't worry about it. I probably wouldn't do a night drop either, not really needed. The snake knows where the heat is and will go there if it needs it. As long as it is healthy and digesting fine I wouldn't worry. We can't watch our snakes 24 hours a day, so you never really know how much it is actually using the heat. I've had a couple hatchlings that were always climbing in the vines and I rarely seen them on the heat. Though as adults I find I see them curled up on the heat more often, maybe just because they are bigger and easier to see lol. But yeah, as long as it is healthy I wouldn't worry, snakes know what to do.
