Cool Dragonfly...for Jennrose

MegF.

That's for sale???
I know you love preying mantis, but I figure you'd like this dragonfly too. It's kind of prehistoric looking and very different from most of the ones I see.

Cool damselfly, Meg. Great pic, too! They are closely related to dragonflies (obviously), but they rest with their wings folded up over their backs while dragonflies rest with their wings out to the sides.

Thanks Desert Animal. I almost thought it was one after I posted it and really looked at it. I love the googly eyes too. Very cool critters. Didn't know they were that large though.

Fantastic shot. I got buzzed by a big hawker dragonfly today but didn't manage to get any pictures

BEAUTIFUL! I love those wings. The color is great!

I love all bugs...except mosquitos...does the world really NEED mosquitos?

I really don't like ants. My whole left hand and arm are covered with fire ant bite blisters from digging in my irrigation hose last night.

Or flies....or those little no see um gnats......???

Fleas...fleas can go to. And ticks as well. Anything small enough that I can't readily see it, but that has the power to make me misserable for a week must go away. Hahahahaha.

As for the ants...don't really have fire ants here (allthough as a kid, I had this little book on "KILLER BUGS" and was obsessed with fire ants...and I was only in the 2nd grade! LOL!)...allthough while the black house ants are annoying at times....they don't have to go away....just stay out of my house! HA!

Very cool indeed. Check out helicopter damselflies. They're HUGE, and they really do look like miniature helicopters out in the forest. I think they're still holding my favorite insect spot.

Have you checked out what's that bug website? They have cool stuff on all sorts of bugs.

Great damselfly shot. Those buggers are hard to get a good photo of...I am pretty good with dragonflies but haven't a single decent damselfly shot yet.

I don't like the fireants either - but I am allergic to them. Not only do their bites hurt, but I break into hives! I have to carry Benadryl with me everywhere just in case I get bit by one.

Hope you don't mind - here are some random shots of the variety of dragonflies we get down here. Thought Jenn might like these too!

Wow great shots of the damsel fly and dragon flies! My oldest son loves them. I can't wait to show him the photos tomorrow.

The pink one is amazing!
I think that is why I like to photograph them so much. It never ceases to amaze me all the beautiful colors that they come in. I actually had to go buy myself an Audubon book on them so I could learn all the different species we have around here. Some are more common than others, but they are all just spectacular in their own right. I usually use a telephoto macro lens when I am shooting them, but where I go, they are so used to people you can get rather close without them flying away which really helps too!!

Great photos, everyone!

If you like bugs, check out the documentary DVD series "Life in the Undergrowth", by David Attenborough. It's really cool.

I live in Texas, and we're swarming with fire ants...but they don't really bother me. I'm horribly allergic to mosquitos. I get huge, feverish welts from mosquitos. I'd take a fire ant bite over a mosquito any day.

We used to use damsel flies when fishing at this one girl scout camp that I used to go to all the time. They are cool bugs/insects as are dragonflies! All of the pictures posted are neat!

We don't get any of the cool bugs here, just ants and roaches - both of which can disappear as far as I'm concerned. The flies too. What I miss the most though are the butterflies.
