Cornsnakes..Boring????

zakee846

Still Snakeless
the other day i was at petco, and i was looking at there precious cornsnakes, (by the way, they were housed together so isn't that bad?? they were very small though) and all the cornsnakes were doing was sitting there curled up doing NOTHING, is this normal, i noticed that the other snakes they had out were moving around a lot more. I did not see a cornsnake move a single muscle the whole time i was looking at them...
Coments???? :shrugs: :sobstory:

Corn snakes are crepuscular, meaning that they are mostly active around dusk and dawn. They're fairly secretive animals much of the time anyway. If you want an active and entertaining pet to watch, corns may not be the best choice. :shrugs:

I honestly think corns are the best snake on the planet to keep, ive kept reptiles for about 18years, many being rarer species to rarely come up and after all that time the one reptile i went back to is corns

I dont mind them hiding during the day, but what do you do when you want to handle them, pull them away from there sleep?

Yeah, Dean's right, but BORING?????? :eek1: No way!!! Some are out a lot more than expected, like my golddust, and some are even more reserved than expected, like my amel stripe.

They may not always be the most interesting to watch but there is no way they are boring. lol But I know what you mean.

we always handle ours in the evening time anyway(have loads more time), if fact my 11year old daughters holding one right now and its 7.30pm here

Sorry, I didn't see the other questions, they were posted when I was posting. When taking them out they are a lot easier to deal with than some other snakes IMO. If you take them out regularly they will get use to you and get use to being handled, and can become nice pets to let crawl over your hands while sitting on the couch or watching television. They are fine to be handoed a lot. They don't mind it and some clearly enjoy it.

That's their defence mechanism.

In the wild, their predators can spot them more easily if they're moving. So if they see something that they're not sure of, they'll freeze until it goes away.

Rest assured, the minute you turned and walked away, the ones in the shop will have gone back to their synchronised tap dance routine! :crazy02:

As they get older and get to know you in your own home, they become more confident and most will happily go about their business regardless of whether you're watching. I have a bank of three vivs next to my computer desk, and as I'm typing this, I have two adult Corns peering over my shoulder.

Although as above, they will be more active around dawn and dusk

I find that the more I learn and begin to understand about corn behaviour, why they do what they do, the more entertaining they become and the more emotionally involved I become in their experiences, good and bad.

Defense mechanisms, feeding behaviours, fear postures, successful sheds, feeding time, all seem more interesting when I watch for subtle changes and make adjustments to enhance my snakes life in captivity.

I said it here before... It's like baseball, it;s a game of great moments followed by a pause.

I think if anything a corn is much more entertaining to handle than say a ball python. At least a corn is always moving and not just sitting there doing nothing when you are holding them, even if it really is just them trying to get away. I still find it entertaining to watch the way they take advantage of any crack, hole, or wire to show their acrobatic skills. :)

There seems to be a lot of these comments popping up lately :shrugs:
At least if that's the way you really feel it's better you find it out first now before bringing an unloved snake into it.

I agree...I'm seeing a lot of these "boring pet" comments lately on different forums, and I don't get it. I've been keeping and studying snakes for years, and I have never once been bored with them. I guess it just depends on what you're looking for in a pet...

It's hard to imagine what sort of laugh-a-minute 'fun' you could expect from a snake in order to get bored with it :shrugs:
This is like the 'my snake keeps hiding' complaints, which make no sense at all. I regard my snakes as up a level from my tropical fish in terms of interaction, but down a notch on 'entertainment value'! Both give me plenty of food for thought in watching them express their behaviour, in providing a good environment. I don't actually want anything more from them, except hopefully to get the breeding side of things right and then see what hatchlings will result.

These things are boring... think I am going to have to go pick me up some hermit crabs so I can see some action!!! :duck:

as we see it over here, petco? are not the smartest company when it comes to corns. What they should a done is put a ball in there for them to chase.
Go to www.talkingballs.co.uk an choose a little cornball before you get your snake.

There we go, more action .. *lol* Some people think these are beginner snakes too..

Most snakes are not highly active mozt of the time... IS there excitment about them? Yes there is, but it is smaller and more specialized, yet simplified actions or reactions most people miss... I can say positivily, that every corn I have, each has its own personalitie to an extent..

Hey don't dis the Hermit Crabs! lol, those were my first pet when I was little I loved them and even thought they had little personalities. In fact I even had birthday parties for them on their made up birthdays! Maybe you just have to be a certain type of person ( i.e strange) to enjoy these types of animals. ;)

I'm in the defense of the hermit crabs too
I love mine. But much like the snake the only time I often catch them moving around is when I take them out.
Oh noes the pet actually requires effort on my part!
