distended mold spot on egg

MotleyCrue

I have some mold on one the eggs from my amel, which in and of itself is not unusual, but it is distending the egg downward. This particular eggs sits up on top of another egg. I noticed this last night as I was candling them.

It distends about 3/16 of an inch. I was thinking about removing this eggs from the clutch and just QTing in another bin, but the eggs are quite stuck together. Any ideas on how to try and separate eggs? Or am I maybe over-reacting and should just leave nature alone?

sometimes the eggs can bulge if they are too moist, check the humidity because too much moisture can drown the babies, but it doenst look too bad at all. Also as they get to a certain size the eggs do kinda push a bit. I would say you could treat the mold by brushing it off gently and keeping it dry for a little bit, maybe keeping the moss/vermiculite of of it for a few days.

it doesnt look too bad at all, i had an egg that looked like a golfball one time! and two babies came out of it :) but then another one that ended up having a little trouble getting out of the fluid on his own because there was so much of it.

I've had eggs do that with no problems at all. Right now I probably have a dozen or so that are distending with and w/out mold and I expect them to hatch just fine. I say it's nothing to worry about. Let us know when it hatches.

This particular eggs sits on top of another and does not touch the vermiculite directly. I don't see any other mold anywhere. Gonna brush off what mold I can tonite.

Well that's good to know! These eggs were laid 5/12 so I am expecting them to hatch around 7/12 but you know how those thing go. :headbang:
Thanks for the responses.

I wouldn't try to remove it. If it goes bad, it won't "infect" the others. You risk damaging the neighboring eggs if it doesn't peel away easily, as well as risk damaging the egg itself. If the mold really bothers you, you can brush it away with a Q-tip moistened in Listerine.

oh yeah when i say cleaning it up, i mean not pulling it appart just taking a Q tip or paper towel and brushing it away from the eggs. keeping that spot dry will kill the mold usually but over all most eggs never have too many problems with mold, they have their own ways of protecting the snake inside :)

def dont want to try and pull the egg off

Well crap. I just checked on my eggs and found this. My timing must have been perfect because as I opened the box I saw a 2nd "drip". :( These eggs are only at day 38.

Well if the little guy inside does come out he will most likely be very small and probably not make it. And I need to do some thing about the egg shell that will be left behind. I'm thinking of cutting away as much as I can and then cleaning out the inside of what left. Any other ideas?

i've seen eggs (not personally, but on here) that have leaked, and you can actually seal them up with a bandaid or a wet piece of paper towel, and they're usually perfectly okay!

at this point i definitely wouldn't try to remove the egg because you're almost certain to squish out some more liquid. though i'm not 100% sure the liquid is essential to the development of the baby, but you're better safe than sorry.

i'm sure somebody here can chime in about how to seal up that egg! don't fret

a Small Piece of duct Tape...should do the trick......thats what?? 1002 uses for duct tape?

I'm really not serious...but then..ya never know.....

Both good ideas! I cleaned it off with a Q-tip & wrapped a bandaid snuggly into place. Hope fully it'll stop any more leakage and let the little guy keep growing. Thanks for the encouragement and ideas.

not a bad call. I would wipe it with a baby wipe or something, then just seal it best as I could with a slice of duct. certainly an option.

Well I have to say this is an absolute first for me. I swabbed it with a light alcohol/water solution and put a bandaid. :) Think I should change it in a week or just let it ride? I guess just keep an eye on it and see what it looks like in a week.

Ah perfect!
Keep the area clean I know ive seen eggs completely cut open for observation hatch all the way through :)

Exciting! Im sure the little dude will do well! Might be a good time to invest in some athletic tape?

Im cheering for the little lad!:)

I have to say that the egg looks quite adorable wrapped up in a bandaid!
Here is hoping that the little guy makes it.

Well, these started hatching today and little leaky is pipped! I was nervous so I helped him open his egg a bit just to be sure he makes it out. Sorry no pics yet, my dad borrowed my camera. I will try to get some up tonight.

Thanks to all for the advice and for not letting me give up and remove this egg from the clutch.

I'm not going to comment on the egg as there is enough good info already ..
For mould I use athletes foot powder lightly dusted on with a dry paint brush...
And for separating eggs... Egg white painted on will ease them apart...
