Ok,I like some opinions as to how you all label your corns and document behavior. I'm trying to figure out the best/most common/scientific way of doing this. What symbols/shorthand do you use, or do you only use part of them to identify each corn for: sex,morph ( this one especially),age,hets etc...and then how do you document ( on a card,book,computer)and chart behavior eg. sheds,feeds (size of of food), brumation, mating,regurge, refusals etc... thanks, Kyle

PS Does anyone know of a pdf or download for index cards for this stuff?
 
I have a little notebook I use to record all of my snakes' feedings and sheds. It is simple but works for me. Then again I do not have a lot of snakes to keep track of however I am sure someone here has a better record keeping method. Good luck!
 
All of my corns have their own A5 book with a label on the front that has, name, sex, morph, date acquired etc. I record all their events in the book ie feed, refuse, shed, mating, laying etc. I am also in the process of transferring that info onto my computer just using a word processor program, but I have heard there are herp tracking software programs out there. Just been too lazy to look into it further, that and I'm not fully computer savvy yet :)
 
I wrote a little something that I use to keep all my records and tracking. Tried some of the other available products, and I wasn't overly impressed with any of them, so made my own. It's free, so feel free to download it if you'd like. The link is in my signature.

Will this program work with Windows Vista Home Premium? and how much memory will it take? Or will that depend on how much info you input into it?

My daughter asked me to ask this, as I said before I'm not completely computer savvy yet, but she's trying hard to edjumacate me...:grin01:

I tried using an excel worksheet that I made, but got tired of having to type everything in. Now everyone just has a notecard clipped to their shelf on the rack. Whenever something happens, I right it down; along with weights. With the weights I weigh them after every shed (on an empty stomach) up to a year; I continue to do this with females, but after a year I only weight the males a few times a year.

When the card is full I put it in an indexing box; each corn has its own "file" in there. It's cheap and easy and works great for me.

I'm pretty sure I was able to test it on Vista, so shouldn't be a problem. Memory and CPU footprints are fairly minimal.

To give a little more detail for you daughter (or anyone else interested), it's written in Java, so will work with any OS that has at least version 1.6 JRE installed. The available installer is only for Windows, but the required jar files to get it running on other OS's are also available on my site. JRE stands for Java Runtime Engine, and can be found here if needed: http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Not what I was necessarily going for with the site design, but I'll take it, lol. Thanks and hope it works out for you.
 
I am no computer guy but just did a quick excel.
Made a two colums for each snake, one for event and other for date.
I then used formate and shade (color) for each event.
I made a little index at the bottom noting each event to a color, still adding to this as new events come up.
As your list for the events gets longer just insert more rows which will move index down.
I only have a few babies so far so pretty easy, actually like adding events so far but am sure will be a pain with more corns!

I am not a computer guy like I said but easier a lot of times then reading my own hand writing.
