Dodge Dakota Trucks

All right, this is REALLY going to be off topic. But here goes, I'm interested in possibly getting a two to three year old Four door Dodge Dakota truck next year. Probably in the late spring. Just wanted to see if anyone on the forum has, or has had a Dakota truck in the past ? If so, feel free to tell me about it. Likes and dislikes.

Thanks, Stephen

If you weant a truck with some cajones, get a Ram 2500 with a Cummins Turbo diesel. The engine cannot be killed and will tow just about anything you could throw at it, short of a big-rig trailer.

The Dakota is a nice truck, but really...it's a glorified SUV. If torque and towing capacity isn't what you're after, I'd look at the Magnum Hemi R/T...now that's a car worth buying... :grin01:

You've got a 50/50 shot with a Dakota. It will either be a great truck or you'll have all kinds of motor and tranny trouble.I know a bunch of people who had or have them and that's what they all say.I'd go for a Toyota Tacoma.

I have heard about the transmission problems. But thought that was from several years ago. Don't they have that fixed now ?

my dad bought one brand new 3yrs ago. 4 months after he got it the check engine light came on. He took it back to be checked out... I love this part! the guy comes out and says he needs a new part, no big deal. My dad asks what part, and the guy says it needs a new transmission!

Just a part! the look on his face! Priceless! at least it was under warranty.

I have a dakota and personally I love it. Its an 01 and I have barely had any issues besides the recall a couple years ago. I got it when it had 10 miles on it and it has almost 100k on it now. But yeah, its about 50/50 on these trucks for sure. I had a jeep before the Dakota and I had the trans replaced 2x, along with many other problems. I thought I would have problems for sure with another Chrysler product but so far so good. I will have this car until I run it to the ground. It works perfectly with my summer field work as a biologist. Anything bigger would be hard to get around some of these narrow dirt roads.

Good luck deciding!

After my Dodge Dakota Dilemma back in the 80's I vowed to never own a Dodge again... My Honda has 207,000 miles on it, and I put 740 more on getting to work every week...

I'd go with a silverado my moms friend had an 84 and it was great up until my mom blew the engine up in like 04.

I had a Dakota a few years ago. It drove just fine and everything, but the material inside seemed cheap. After a few months everything was rattling and squeaking like it was going to fall apart. We ended up trading it in on a Dodge Ram 2500. If you want a medium truck, I would go with a Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Those are pretty awesome. Toyota makes awesome vehicles. Trucks, cars, SUVs... Toyotas last forever. Too bad Honda doesn't make a "real" truck. The Ridgeline is hardly a truck...

I have a '98 Ford Ranger that I use as a work truck and I literally beat the crap out of it. It's been the best vehicle I've ever owned. It just reciently turned 202,000 miles.

Transmissions seem to be a big problem.

Yes , I'm sorta getting that feeling too. Basically I'm interested in a mid size truck that has the full Four door option ( crew cab ? ) I guess , 6 cylinder maybe 8, and an automatic. My wife says, if I get a truck it has to be big enough to carry the family in comfortably. Yet, I don't need and can;t afford anything too big ex, Dodge 1500, 2500 ; Ford 250 and above ,etc.

Something just big enough to haul the usual load of mulch, furniture, bags of Rodent feed etc. Oh yeah cant forget my beloved Road Bike . Ha, Ha.

So keep on w/ the suggestions, and thanks for the great reponse to this post.

Mine is the V8 4x4 two door model. I know that they have had trans problems but so far mine has been great. No funny noises even though I off road with it every summer. The shocks are a bit worn out, but not bad wear on it for being 6 years old.

The tacoma is also a nice truck, but way overpriced IMO, and a bit smaller than the dakota. I don't know what other mid-sized trucks there are besides dakota's though. Hope you figure out what works out for you. :)

If you don't mind GM products, you could always go with a Chevy Colorado, or a GMC Canyon. Those are both great trucks, and they come in 4-door models too. I am especially fond of the Canyon. Just something about it looks great. Then there's the Nissan Frontier. Also comes in 4-door.

If you want a Dakota, but want some balls as well then I would suggest going for the older RT. Still the Dakota size, but with a 5.9L V8 engine. Talk about power & speed! I had a 1500 Ram with that engine and people definitely had a hard time keeping up with me. Imagine what a lighter truck could do with the same engine :)

For some reason, Chrysler just hasn't been able to nail their transmissions with the newer models. I know... it hurts to hear it! It hurts me to say it, as I am a HUGE Mopar enthusiast. Truth is truth. But you can't beat a 98-00 Dakota RT. Always wanted one of those....

I have a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 4 door with a 4.8L V8 and a 4 speed auto transmission purchased in late 2005. So far so good. I've been using it all summer to tow my bass boat around and haven't had a lick of trouble with it yet. I got it for right around $23,000 brand new during one of the GM sales.
