Does feeding influence corns headsize?

My goodness. Okay, parents, be sure to feed your kids no more than two spoonfuls of cereal and half a hot dog per day! You want them to stay as small and cute as possible.

Sometimes there just aren't enough words!

On a more serious note, pinkies are not nutritious enough to help a snake grow up as healthy as it should. This is why just about anyone who knows snakes will tell you to get them on fuzzies as soon as they are able, because in the fuzzies will be bone, which the snake needs for calcium and such.

Forcing your snake to stay on one pink a week for 'as long as possible' just because you want it to stay 'cute' is not only selfish, it's really not a good idea. They won't thrive and won't be as strong as a snake regularly fed the proper sized food. As someone said, snakes aren't toys. Respect them as living creatures who have the right to a HEALTHY life, not as something that's a cute amusement for you.

you know you gave me some good info. and im glad you told me, i wasnt aware that pinkies didnt have the proper nutrients. like i said before, the health is the most important part. but im really dissapointed in the way you delivered you answer. you really didnt have to be such an ass about it. you are right, and i thank you for clearing it up for me. but i will always regard you as the asshole that gave me the right answer. i was hoping i could come to this site and learn as much as possible about a corn snake before i accually got one. but if this is the type of responses im going to get, i might as well just listen to the pet store guy.

tcr03, I really am sorry you see it that way, but if that is how you feel then perhaps you understand how emotions are delivered in a message; to me, and likely to others who responded a bit negatively as well, you seemed to be the person who wanted to just keep your snake small because that's all that mattered. Maybe it wasn't what you intended, but how it came across certainly made it seem that way. It's not an excuse for a truly mean response, and if anything mine was more sarcastic than mean. But the impression is the same.

It's good you're here to learn before getting your snake. By all means ask questions and learn as much as you can -- we all did at some point, and it's the health and care of the snake that truly matters in the end.

If you haven't yet, be sure to pick up Kathy Love's Corn Snake Manual... it's the "Bible" of the corn snake world, and for good reason. Lots of good info and something every new owner -- and even experienced breeders -- do good to keep around. :) Good luck.

Well I know I'm going to regret this as I was just on my way to bed, but here goes.

Researching before getting a pet is always a good thing. But either the way you worded your previous posts or if you truly want to keep your snake "cute", I've no earthly idea.

We feel passionately about our pets, whether they be snakes, horses, dogs or cats. And we don't like to think of people ignorantly (meaning lack of knowledge) taking care of things in order for their own purposes to be met. Snakes are going to grow, its just a fact of life. Not giving them the proper nutrition while they are growing is just going to create a very unhealthy animal in the end.

If you can be mature and not running off to your bedroom with the idle threat, then we can be polite. Which I thought most of the past posts have been, even including Wilder's. I happen to know her personally, and its just something she feels very passionately about and that passion came out in her post. Opinions are like noses, everyone has one..and some are ugly. People don't always have to be nice or agree, its just the way the world turns. And around here, there's a lot of different ideas going on at once and disagreements arise. But we don't run off and pout with our lip out when someone tells us we were being careless. We reply rationally and maturely as best we know how to get our point across of what we were actually thinking/feeling to get the air cleared. Which your final post did have some rational thoughts and words in it.

If if the pouting thing really works...good for you. Although I wouldn't listen to the pet store guy. He's out to make a buck and could generally care less about the animals. Us on the other hand, while we may be abrasive at times, care for the animals we keep and like to see them cared for in return by others. But if you want some serious research thats truthful, honest, and to the point without being mean...get Kathy Love's book about Cornsnakes. Its available on her website, www.cornutopia.com.

ok, i have learned alot in this thread. and i really do appriciate all the help. id like to start fresh. yeh the way some of your responses were worded did bother me, i felt like i was being attacked. but all is good now. and i do really want to get a corn, and want to learn as much as possible before getting one. so i will stick around and continue to ask guestions, whether stupid or good.

tcr03,
Hope you don't take my asking the wrong way, but what's your reasoning for wanting to keep a snake small for an unnaturally extended period of time? If not for cost, "convenience"(such as keeping it in a smaller space for longer), or aesthetic motives, then what?

Just wondering if you have a justifiable reason, although I can't say I can really think of any. I'm guessing that’s is part of the reason for the negative feedback you've received.. it just seems a bit selfish I guess?

Hope my words weren't too harsh, just trying to shed some light on the situation. Good luck with your research.

Giant, he already told he thinks they're cute and nicely colored when small in previous posts, I think this discussion should be done by now... it's also quite off topic and I'm the boss of my topic :p ehhh... of course just under surveillance of Rich :sidestep:

trco3, You can use this as a rule of thumb: When a pinkie leaves a barely visible lump in the belly, give it 2 pinks per feed for about 4-5 feeds and then start feeding it fuzzies (1 per 5 days) so long as you don't excede the rule that the food should not be larger than 1½ times the width of the snake.

The snake will inevitably grow, but if once it's onto hopper sized mice, you start feeding one mouse per week, it won't grow super fast.

I know people too who prefer the look of a smaller snake and don't want a 5 foot, 600g snake but it's not great for your snakes health to be under fed. I'm sure you meant no harm by it. I'm sure a little underfeeding will do less harm than over feeding. Younger animals need more frequent feeds than adults. When your snake reaches adult size (after 3-4 years) you can feed it every 10-14 days and that's a good maintenence diet. Always use the 'no greater than 1½ times the width of the snake' rule and feed evey 5 days until it gets to hoppers and then every 7 days and you should be fine.

Good luck.

lol, you guys are too funny. i still have to get my wife to let me keep the snake at home
